1.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary sensibility on period instruments
I also do not share the enthusiasm of some other reviewers. Although the virtuosity of the performers is extraordinary they draw too much attention to their own skills and too little to Bach and his music. The main problem is tempi. These are generally so fast as to sometimes border on the grotesque. Over the past two or three decades, as Bach scholarship has developed,...

Il Giardino Armonico is rightfully already recognised as one of the leading ensembles of performing and enterpreting the music of the baroque era. And their performances of Bach's Brandenburger Concertos is more than up to par.

It is such an interesting paradox that Il Giardino Armonico, who belong to those who firmly believe that this music should be played on the original instruments used by the time the music was composed - in other words on the same instruments there was present at the time Bach, and all the other great baroque composers, was alive - that this music seems more vibrant, relevant, lively and powerful than ever. Moreover the production is also very natural with a wonderful sound.

How many boring, smooth and insignificant recordings of these particular concerts haven't already been issued and it is just such a relief that in our present time we can witness such dedication and stunning musicianship. Highly recommended for those who really value this great timeless music.

1.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary sensibility on period instruments, 27 Dec 2012

I also do not share the enthusiasm of some other reviewers. Although the virtuosity of the performers is extraordinary they draw too much attention to their own skills and too little to Bach and his music. The main problem is tempi. These are generally so fast as to sometimes border on the grotesque. Over the past two or three decades, as Bach scholarship has developed, performance speeds have generally become much faster, and this has certainly helped our collective understanding of the music.
Nevertheless, the performances on this CD are so fast that the melodic outlines sometimes become impossible to follow, and Bach's complex and detailed linear thought is transformed into a swashbuckling blur of virtuosity, Yes, the music certainly is rollicking but should this be achieved at the expense of all other values? The dance movements might appear suitable for a 21st century sensibility but somewhat alien to an 18th century courtier. Despite the remark by Bach's son that, on the whole his father favoured faster speeds, the tempi adopted on this CD are completely over the top.
At first I thought I needed time to become used to this version, but having owned it for about a year I find I cannot bear it any more.

Be prepared to be blown away by enthusiastic musicians playing original instruments in music they quite obviously believe in and enjoy. If you like the sound of natural horns then buy this today. They don't come more rollicking than this. If you are down in the dumps with grey skies then make the sun come out in your listening world with this very well recorded outing into the baroque.

5.0 out of 5 stars Period instruments? - rather nice!, 1 Nov 2012

I have taken some persuading to go along with the period instrument movement. For example, I still prefer the big Bach organ works on an English romantic organ in a building with a decent acoustic. Ever heard the big B minor in an English Cathedral? - it's simply thrilling! (I know, I am a Philistine) However, I love this disc and am playing it now in preference to my Mariner or Menuhin versions. Gorgeous fresh sound and , where appropriate, lively tempos.
