We bought this tool in order to execute an efficient data entry for tons of documents id-numbers. It works very well with very few errors. It easy to calibrate and the possibility to exclude the not used chars improves the reliability.
The preview screen does its job and the two configurable pushbuttons are a "plus" very useful.
Unfortunately the manufacturer does not produce it anymore! The new IRISPen 7 is terrible, trust me.

I purchased this to read text or bar codes off labels on items to be catalogued in our database.
The end is a little too clunky to read text and unless the rest of the background is white you will struggle to get it to read anything.
Patience is required. It takes a few moments for it to start scanning and then requires a smooth straight pass over the text. This is difficult if you are holding the item you are scanning. I frequently found I was halfway across the label before it had started scanning or that my scan was wobbly and wouldn't read.
Once installed (with the Irispen software running) it brings up a box that displays what you scan. It then takes that scan and types it into whatever the current active window is as if you were typing it on the keyboard. Note: This can be a bit ropey if you are scanning stuff to be entered into a web browser as it sometime hits special keys when it reads things incorrectly that can do interesting thinks in IE.
To scan (with the software running. You open the window where you want the text and put the cursor in the right position. Then press the pen down on the item left of the text you wish to scan. The light will come on. Slowly (But not too slowly) drag the pen across the text. The wheel underneath the tip of the pen has to maintain contact with the surface at all time.
It does not really do what I need it to do and is quite expensive for an interesting toy.
If you just need to read bar codes. Buy a bar code reader.
If you have a lot of small (But not to small) text like names, or addresses. This is where it could come in useful and can be quite accurate. But takes a little practice.
