I thought it would be bad - I was wrong
I started watching this with a degree of dread - the memory of other shows at the front of my mind - after a couple of episodes I was hooked.
It has a comfortable familiar feeling with out being just another a copy of previous ideas.
A great series, I highly recommend it.
Note - this is season one and two in the one box set:...

No clever quips, not entertaining & v.poor quality!
I am astonished by how many people have given this series a 5 star rating! I purchased the boxset based on the outstanding reviews here on Amazon and the idea of another potentially great vampire show... unfortunately this really doesn't deliver.
More hard-nosed than BUFFY and perhaps darker than SUPERNATURAL but not as high quality as either. I found myself...

I was drawn to the show when I first started watching the commercials on the Lifetime TV network (in America).
Based on the successful books by Tanya Huff, Blood Ties follows Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox), a private investigator who was released from the Toronto Metro Police because she is going blind because of retintus pigmentosa. It was a normal day in the office when Gothic girl Coreen (Gina Holden) comes into her office to help her find her boyfriend Ian's killer; whom she believes was a vampire. What ends up happening to Vicki from this point on changes her life forever.
Along the way, she meets Henry Fitzroy (Kyle Schmid), bastard son of Henry VIII and now well recognized for his graphic novels and charm. They begin a tumultuous relationship against everything the darkness can throw at them.
If anyone was a fan of "Forever Knight" or "Buffy," you definitely want to check out Blood Ties and go on the website to support the show for a second season. The books were extrodinary and if they are able to have their way, it would be interesting to see how they incorporate the second story in book two and the first story in book three into the show.

We're only up to episode 7 in the UK, yet I can't wait to get my hands on the DVD box set so as I can watch them over and over!! I simply love this show - it had me completely hooked from the pilot - something that has never happened to me before with a TV show!!! I am completely obsessed with it!!
It has everything....humour, romance, drama, passion and the supernatural. The scripts are very clever, going from intense drama one week, to flirty humour the next. And the acting is simply superb, never once do you think 'yeah, as if!' the characters totally suck you (no pun intended!)in to their world! And the chemistry between them all just works!
If there is any justice in this world, the show will continue for many more seasons...and until then I can't wait until January to get my hands on this set and feed my Henry addiction!

More hard-nosed than BUFFY and perhaps darker than SUPERNATURAL but not as high quality as either. I found myself waiting for sharp witty humour than never came: no satisfying twists or even a few fun fight-scenes I could relish. Quality-wise, if it wasn't for the 15 certification and the dark subject matter, I would say this would slot in quite nicely amongst the lower-budget daytime TV shows we are so accustomed to.
I managed to get this boxset for £9 and since then, the price has gone down even further. I suppose if you can make it past the pilot, there's a few OK episodes in there to look forward to. I agree with the couple of reviewers who point out that this show just recycles ideas from other (much better) TV shows; it doesn't put a new spin on things and any 'action' sequences presented are really low budget. If you're looking for something that deals with supernatural/occult and you've been a fan of things like BUFFY, ANGEL, SUPERNATURAL etc, I recommend buying THE DRESDEN FILES instead - it's the next logical step I guess and a lot smarter, funnier and miles more entertaining than Blood Ties!

I feel I have to respond to redress the ridiculously high and unwarranted rating of the Vampire series called "Blood ties". No doubt many people have been duped thinking it's a high quality show much like Buffy the Vampire slayer, or some such thing. Unfortunately you have been tricked by desperate American fans knowing this show has been cancelled and for good reason. It's not even mediocre fare.
Clearly there are parallels to Buffy the Vampire slayer and its spin-off series Angel but it honestly doesn't deserve comparison. Calling this a mediocre show is a disservice to the word mediocre. There is nothing quality about this show. The only similarity is vampires and a female lead. Note that I did not say a strong female lead even though the so-called writers try to make her that way.
Now if you think "charmed" is a good series you can disqualify my comments because this is a diluted Buffy styled Vampire Show aimed at the "charmed" demographic . No quality writing/stories, no good action, no quality drama but I'm sure you girls can live with the handsome guys regardless. For those with a little taste try Buffy , Angel or Firefly you'll find guys/girls to lust over with characters and stories you'll *really care about* at the same time.

i bought this dvd because it was cheap and I looking for something to fill the hole left by Buffy / Angel it semed worth a punt. Many complain that the series didn't last beyond the first series but honestly, as much as i tried to like this show, it has too many flaws, the stories are contrived, christina cox is wooden as an actress and the secondary characters are one dimensional at best. there are some good episodes and some good twists but the ending ( i assume it is left open expecting a second series) is very disapointing. One day i hope there will be a series that captures the imagianation as Joss Whedon once did with his shows but this isn't it, if you are loking for a lighter version of his shows without blowing your budget buy this dvd but don't expect too much..

Blood Ties is one of the best new shows on TV this year, because it is a) full of extremely talented unknowns, and b)so simplistic. It really shows that you don't need an infinite budget to make fantastic television.
The premise of the series is steeped in ancient history made modern, the occult made ordinary and the dark and dangerous made very, very sexy indeed.
Christina Cox is beautiful, witty and confident as Vicki, much like an older Veronica Mars. She simply oozes vulnerability and confidence in equal parts, so you never know what she's going to do next, or with whom. Everyone loves an unpredictable heroine.
Her partner in crime (amongst other things...) is the darkly attractive and actually very talented actor Kyle Schmid (he described himself best: "he doesn't need sexual advances because he IS one.)The nice thing about him is that he is gorgeous without becoming vapid. He never comes across as anything but all too aware of his sexuality, but is intelligent and cunning with it, more than a match for Vicki's own razor sharp wit.
Dylan Neal as Mike is a diamond in the rough, such a nice foil for Henry, as he's the opposite and yet has one important thing in common with Henry: he wants Vicki too. And he's willing to fight the undead to get her. What's not to like about that?! We'll just ignore that overly pretty police woman who keeps interfering.
We mustn't forget Gina Holden, who plays the lovely, if a little weird, part of Coreen, who has a neverending crush on Henry that I have a feeling will have serious consequences somewhere down the line. Vicki just doesn't have time to do all the research, coffee and takeout toting that Coreen spends her days doing, and always proves a highlight of the show, if only to see what she's wearing this episode.
The show is smattered with enough flirting, banter and sexual contact between the three leads to keep the love triangle interesting, with tossing in Mike's partner just to make Vicki feel a little less pampered. The small character base gives you a chance to get to know them all, and follow them all closely. It all feels very intimate.
This show's only downfall is that it doesn't receive the publicity and advertising and primetime slot that it should because it's Canadian, not American. It really deserves more, much more.
So get onto Lifetime to make sure we get a Season 2 DVD boxset!!

There are absolutely ZERO subtitles in this box set. Be them english or otherwise. I found the series to be average and the acting really poor. But if you've nothing to do at least it's worth the £9,98 I payed for it but no more!!!
