Accurate Tyre Pressure Readings at Last,
By Lorimer Watson (Bideford) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Michelin Digital Tyre Pressure Gauge (Automotive)
I have tried several mechanical pressure guages over the years and consistently found them inaccurate and inconsistent so I thought I'd go the whole hog and get this Michelin digital unit which was top of the Which? Best Buy table for tyre guages. It was reasonably easy to set up but at first, not wishing to programme the front and rear pressures for my car, the unit kept defaulting to psi after I changed units to Bar. The instructions were of no help here and I eventually found that if I did programme the recommended tyre pressures the pressure units were programmed along with them so now Bar is the default unit. It's very easy to use but to get a good seal on the tyre valve is at first not easy but you soon get the hang of it. The semi-hard case is good quality and a nice addition to a very robust digital guage. As I drive 2 or 3 times a year to Spain (1500 miles one way) and extensively in Spain it gives me peace of mind knowing that I can accurately ensure that my tyre pressures are as they should be. The guage may appear to be somewhat pricey but when it comes to an important (both in safety and economy) thing like tyre pressures a few extra £ for long term assurance is more than worth it.

Solidly built with BIG display, but .....,

... the nozzle is quite wide and as a result doesn't always get a perfect seal with the tyre valve. Lots of hissing air then follows. Still, it is very solidly put together and the huge display (with 0.1 PSI increments) does make a big difference. The hard nylon woven case is also a bonus to stop the "on" button being accidentally hit when it's rolling around in the boot or glove box. The LED torch is adequate at a range of a few inches but no more. Nice product, but a 4-star nonetheless.

Had numerous tyre gauges in the past and none have been 100% accurate or reliable. Although expensive, this gauge feels robust and is very easy to use. Compared the readings against the commercial tyre inflation unit at the local Esso garage and the differences were tiny. So far, very impressed.

This is a real high end product that is extremely easy to use and functional. Had it working within minutes without needing the instructions. Some what highly priced, but you can tell this is a quality product. The storage case is a nice addition. If you want the best, then this is the product for you.

Top Notch,

Received within one day of order, thanks Amazon. The product is of high quality, metal construction with a weighty feel. It is also easy to use and setup. Readings available in Psi/K Pa and Bar. I got this for motorcycle use and it works perfectly. I have 90 degree bends on my valves, those without may have a problem on front tyres with large disc brakes. I have another electronic tyre pressure gauge but it is nowhere near the quality of this. Recommended.

In real-life this is quite large, fairly heavy, and looks a little cheaper then the picture. However it gets the job done very well. The large screen makes reading a tyre pressure childsplay. A great gadget to keep in the car in the supplied case.

Piece of Mind,

No problems at all. Straight out of the box, didn't bother with the instructions, had programmed the front and rear pressures and tested the tyres within 5 mins (had to put my coat on, shoes on and ties laces as well).Whilst you're not likely to be reading pressures in the dark (except in an emergency when you think the tyre looks on the low side), the backlit display and bright led could be useful.

Accurate, but some problems getting a good seal,

A very well built tool. You might say a little bit over engineered for a tyre pressure gauge.I found it a little awkward to get a seal on the valve on the first attempt. You don't really want to be venting air when you are trying find out what your pressures are. It's a heavy, well made device that sits in the hand quite nicely. It seems quite accurate when compared to my workshop compressor. The two gauges show virtually the same pressure, but this device is easier to see what the exact pressure is. The back and front tyre set up is not needed on my car as both are the same pressure, but I suppose it would be a useful feature for those who need it. I've only given it 3 stars, as I feel the poor fitting that I have experiences knocks this device down a bit. I suppose it may just be inexperience in using it and I may get better results the more I use it. But a pressure gauge should not be something that is difficult to get a good seal with. After all, it is only designed to do one thing - Fit on a tyre valve. But for this weakness I might have given 5 stars. It does seem to provide accurate readings and fits the hand comfortably. Maybe a bit over the top for a tyre pressure gauge.

Does the job even if it is a little expensive,

Does the job and some features that I thought were gimmicky at first are actually quite useful, namely; the LED light and the programmable front / rear tyre pressures. The device itself seems well made and it feels very solid - with a surprising but reassuring weight to it. The gauge is also pleasant to use courtesy of the rubber grip (feels like suede). So far I've had no trouble getting a good seal on the tyre and the easy-to-read, bright display is excellent. I would agree with others that the unit turns off too quickly but it does not take long to turn back on - it causes minimal inconvenience in my experience. So, the product itself is very good (and the included carry case is a nice bonus) but the price is going to knock it down to 4 stars. That being said, the quality of the unit may keep it working for many years - justifying the RRP - but I can't say for sure right now.

Easy to use and read, versatile and well made. Bit on the expensive side for a tyre pressure gauge, but it is better quality than some cheaper ones.
