This is a welcome 12 disc reissue of the Erato recordings by late Mravinsky, including the memorable live performances and stereo recordings. I don't agree with some of his interpretations here, but many of these performances are utterly gripping and incandescent, reflecting Mravinsky's uncompromising quest for ever deeper musicality and emotional/spiritual experiences.

It is best to have a historical interest in Mravinsky's recordings to really appreciate these recordings. Most are in mono (not specified for each disc), but what I find annoying and distracting is the almost constant coughing and other noises from the public. The Shostakovith 10th is particularly bad in this respect because there are many quiet passages.

Although some of the performances are exceptional, unfortunately I find the disturbances cause a mental irritation which prevents me from appreciating them. Perhaps the less irritable may not be so affected, but you have been warned!

Anyone interested in Russian music HAS to own this set of CD's! Mravinsky reigned supreme in this repertore and his versions often remain the benchmark recordings.
