5.0 out of 5 stars Miles' early classic album collection, 10 Aug 2009
By
This review is from: Original Album Classics (Audio CD)
If you are only familiar with Miles' later electric albums this a great way of filling that gap without breaking the bank.
This collection includes ;
ROUND MIDNIGHT, MILESTONES, and the 58 SESSIONS, which all feature John Coltrane on Tenor ( and Cannonball Adderly, Alto on milestones and 58 sessions ) plus the classic rythmn section of Paul Chambers bass, Philly joe Jones or Jimmy Cobb drums and Red Garland (round midnight and milestones)or Bill Evans (58 sessions) piano, plus MILES AHEAD and PORGY and BESS, both orchestrated by Gil Evans.
A truly classic collection, as all the albums in this series seem to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miles smiles at you, 9 Nov 2009
This review is from: Original Album Classics (Audio CD)
Well, this is really significant and beautiful package, a perfect intro to the art of Miles DAVIS (and of Cannonball, Trane, Gil Evans....). Naturally, hard-core Miles fans might complain too small letters on the original sleeves design, lack of real and reliable booklet and so forth... And they'd be quite right, but this is one of those value for money products. I bought it although I previously owned the magnificent "Porgy and Bess" album and didn't regret it.

As for the discographical data, there's always internet to patch things up... It's hard for me to pick the best of the 5 cds, I'd say ALL are essential for Miles Davis pre-fusion jazz phases (and I am, admittedly, a big fan of these pre-fusion phases). This is acoustic jazz at its bast, both in Gil Evans arranged large ansambles and in small groups.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music, shame about Amazon's tagging, 25 Jun 2011

Can't argue with the quality of the music here, but when I downloaded the (cheaper) MP3 version of this album, the tracks were all tagged with the name of the collection, meaning I had to go into iTunes and identify and rename all the individual albums. Not the biggest deal in the world, but an inconvenience.

Five stars for the music. Two stars for Amazon's tagging.

There in fact three boxed sets of Miles davis as I write this review.
This is the link for the others
Original Album Classics
Original Album Classics
Check them out to see that you get exactly what you want.

On a minor note these are not the original albums.
BUT are in fact the rerealeased ones with the extra tracks so making them even better value and of notice to people who have the orginal CD releases.
As far as I can may out this is the case on 4 out of the 5 CDs.

Thought the track listing would be of be of great importance so you may see what you are getting.
Who knows you just might by the sets to get the extra tracks at a very reasonable price?
