Our Victorian house has original banisters and railings to which all normal and as we found cheap baby gates dont fit. This gate does fit them and works fine, if you have skirting boards you will also need the fitting kit or if you are a good DIY'er you could put a piece of wood as a spacer. The gate works just as the product website says, it is possible to operate one handed whilst holding the baby, but needs a bit of skill and a knack, which when you don't have is annoying. Often it is tricky to get both the top and bottom fixing in their respective hooks first time as the gate is on a ratchet, like a seatbelt that once in won't come out again without resetting. The warning ratchet sound when it opens is good from a baby safety point of view but is also a bit annoying especially when you have just got the little mite asleep. I must admit nearly £90 for a gate in my option is a bit steep but this was the only one we could find that would fit our stair configuration. They do however sell at astronomical prices on ebay, so keep all the packaging and once no longer needed sell on ebay and you should get back up to 3/4 of the original cost.
