3.0 out of 5 stars You are all a bit confused with this subtitle issue
There are 3 versions of Nightwatch on DVD.
1 (cover: face with birds) is the original in Russian with COOL English subtitles that fade away and Add to the films enjoyment (I believe that this is the one that Ajeigh would watch) And is definitely the best and deserves 5 Stars.
If you watched Nightwatch recently on Channel 4, this is the one.

If you watched Nightwatch recently on Channel 4, this is the one.

2 (cover: Black and White/Blue with title across the middle on Red background) is a dubbed version which is absolutely dreadful because of the dubbing.

3 is the 'sunglasses cover' "English for the hearing impaired" subtitles with continual information like [THUNDER RUMBLES], [INAUDIBLE DIALOG] and [YELLING]. Great if you're deaf or hearing impaired but not for the rest of us.

So I would recommend that everyone watch the version of Day Watch which has the guy in the green jumper on the cover, but it is currently only available in REGION 1 from the US!

Would you agree Ajeigh?

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film, Unfortunate DVD, 15 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Daywatch [DVD] (DVD)
First of all I would like to mention my thoughts on the film, which is in my opinion a great accomplishment and a worthy sequel to Nightwatch. If you've read the books then you sould be able to follow both films easily and be able to appreciate them, although do not expect to find the same story. As with Nightwatch the film uses reference and ideas from the books but adapts the story into it's own design, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

If you saw the film in the cinema then be thankful because you've seen the best version of it, if you didn't have the chance to see the film in the cinema then feel free to buy this DVD in ignorance of the quality this film should have been.

The 2-Disc Nightwatch DVD contained not only the original film with the animated subtitles, but also alternate versions of the film without the animated subtitles, dubbing, and a good range of special features. This DVD however, although it still contains the optional dubbing (if you happen to like that), normal subtitles and also a 'making of' featurette, BUT the thing that actually made this film stand out from others and added an extra element to the film which really made a difference to the veiwing by ebglish speaking audiences is NOT INCLUDED. I am of course reffering to the animated subtitles which seemed to be such an integral and enjoyable addition to both Nightwatch and Daywatch alike. As I have said, if you saw this film in the cinema then you will most likely be dissapointed by this DVD, otherwise feel free to buy it since it is still an excellent film. Why the animated subtitles have been removed from a film that relied so heavily upon them I am unable to fathom, but it has crippled what in my opinion should have been one of the best DVD releases this year.

If you haven't seen the film nightwatch, that is. that is a russian fantasy film involving two groups of supernatural creatures living in uneasy harmony in present day moscow, unnoticed by normal people. This is a sequel to nightwatch, and it's to all intents and purposes nightwatch part two as it continues on from the original film. It makes no concessions to new viewers so if you've not seen nightwatch then go and watch that first.

If you have seen nightwatch:

this continues the story on from the end of that film, and ups the stakes somewhat as the light and the dark ones are drawn into conflict. our hero anton is on a quest for the chalk of destiny, an object that can literally rewrite history. but he has a few things to learn on the way..

running for roughly two hours this rounds off the story, and in quite a decent way. the film is well directed and stylish and very clever in the way it depicts it's world, and the cast are all very good, especially the actor who plays the leader of the dark ones, making his character intriguingly ambiguous.

If you liked the first film, you should enjoy this.

but as has been mentioned in other reviews, the dvd is disappointing. the original film had animated subtitles that changed design to match what was happening on screen. but this doesn't have them, just going for ordinary english language ones instead [and greek if you want also] and the only extras are a decent twenty minute long making of documentary [subtitled] and the original russian trailer.

Good film. shame there's not more on the dvd

4.0 out of 5 stars If you love films like Blade runner and Matrix then this film is for you., 28 May 2009
This review is from: Daywatch [DVD] (DVD)
This is a Russian film and has a lot more imagination then many of todays large Hollywood productions. I expect thats the reason why because the Russians think differently to the Americans. The same can be said about other great foreign spoken films such as Pan's Labyrinth, House Of Flying Daggers, Brotherhood Of The Wolf and of coarse this films prequel Nightwatch. The special effects are of Hollywood standard. There is this one very exciting bit of many where a women in doing a handbrake turn on the side of a skyscraper in a sports car. This film is very mad and a bit strange but all the better for it. I own Nightwatch which is a fantastic film too and can't wait for the last one of the trilogy to come out. Best trilogy since the all mighty Lord Of The Ring films definitely worth buying, if you are a big sci-fi/fantasy film fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Superb traction control, 25 April 2010
This review is from: Daywatch [DVD] (DVD)
DAY WATCH is a curious piece of cinema. Yes, it's visually impressive (though less stylised than Night Watch), yes it's packed full of action, and yes it's amazing that all this was done on a tiny budget. But, like its predecessor, it fails to fully engage the viewer. As with Night Watch the film has a staccato structure. The crammed and convoluted plot is constantly manipulated in order to fill the action quotient. Okay, so this is the case with most action movies, but here, when combined with the absence of any really sympathetic characters, it leads to a rather emotionless experience. For the most part this is an example of style over content. That said there's certainly plenty of style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good sequel, 13 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Daywatch [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this recently (not on DVD) and I really enjoyed it. Somehow there has been very little or no promotion for this film when it was released a few months ago - what's up with that? Unless you are keeping tabs on the books from which these movies are made or constantly checking IMDB for updates then it may well have passed you by, which I think is a great shame. Ok it's a Russian film with subtitles but why should it get buried under a bunch of mediocre films released around the same time?

Anyway, I finally got to see it and it was a worthy sequel and fairly close to the book. There were some good effects - I especially liked some of the effects with the vampires and the gloom. The story unfolds gracefully and all the way through you are wondering what is going to happen to Anton and his son, right up until nearly the end.

I recommend both Night Watch and Day Watch movies and all three books (book four is out 2008)

3.0 out of 5 stars "Day Watch" on BLU RAY - Compatibility Issues With The 'US' Disc - Buy The UK Version..., 4 Mar. 2014

Fans of this Russian supernatural slashfest should note that the BLU RAY comes in many versions.

However - the 20th Century Fox 'US' variants are REGION A LOCKED - so won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to 'all regions' (which few are).

Stick to the UK and European releases and you won't get playback problems...

4.0 out of 5 stars If you didn't like Nightwatch ....., 12 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Day Watch [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Then of course you won't like this!! Begs the question why go and see it??!!
Great follow up, shame the subtitles aren't the animated ones that were shown at the cinema but a good movie none the less. Like Nightwatch the sound is better than the picture transfer but it's still a great disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daywatch, 21 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Day Watch [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
A brilliant sequel to Nightwatch, which in turn is a fantastic film. These films are a breath of fresh air compaired to the normal Hollywood style action fantasy films. In a nutshell (and this really does not do the films credit) if you crossed Van Helsing with The Matrix, then you would be close to this style of film. They are very well written (the 4 books are better, but you would struggle to fit 4 books into 2 films!) the screenplay is awesome and the blessing of Bluray really brings them out, just make sure that you watch the traditional Russian soundtrack for authenticity, as the dubbed audio like most just isn't the same!

4.0 out of 5 stars Original if a bit confusing, 10 April 2013
This review is from: Daywatch [DVD] (DVD)
Whilst perhaps not having the same edge as the first one, this is still a solid effort.

The concepts of "good" and "evil" are shown to be just that - arbitary concepts - and in places there seemed to be parralel philosophies of the Jedi and Sith.

That said, the role of the Chalk and the timetravel sequence at the end left me a little confused, and I needed to rewatch those scenes to try to fully understand what was going on.

However, this is a deeply original piece that is dark and gritty with a couple of surprises along the way. I suspect that the book goes further (and have put it on my "to read" list), but the film is definitely worth a look.
