well i had both "steps in time" and "bitter sweet" recorded from my brother at the time as i was well into rock/metal by 1985 but my brothers stuff would filter across the hallway somteimes and paul king was one of those things that i loved one of the most underrated acts in the 80s loved the rock and heavy basslines in some of the tracks too , strong songs well produced ....just bought on mp3 downloads from amazon-modern technology is great ....sometimes!

King enjoyed a successful but immensely short career. After this album (UK Top 10 )was released they had disbanded. The hit singles Alone Without You,Taste Of Your Tears and Torture are packed in with equally stong material such as Platform One,These Things,Sugar Coated Mountain Buddhas and I Cringed I Died I Felt Hot. Thankyou Cherry Red for releasing such a classic album. Now all we need is a remastered version of King's splended debut "Steps In Time".

5.0 out of 5 stars Catchy, fun and nutty. The best album of 1985, 7 April 2010

When many bands start with great success, they can often encounter what is called the Sophomore Slump. This refers to the difficulty in coming up with a worthy follow up to their previous effort. No such thing can be said of King. Bitter Sweet was a superior album to King's great debut album, Steps In Time.

Bitter Sweet had three singles released, all of which were chart hits to varying degrees. 'Alone Without You' is probably the weakest song on the album, but still a bit of harmless pop. 'The Taste Of Your Tears' was a more mid-tempo number, but with a good hook. 'Torture' showcased some of Paul King's wonderful goofball lyrics, placing them against an upbeat and hooky background.

Elsewhere on Bitter Sweet, other highlight include the highly catchy and mildly reggae-esque 'Platform One', the quirky and nutty fun of 'Sugar Candy Mountain Buddhas' and 'Mind Yer Toes', and the straight forward catchy rock of 'These Things'.

I was involved in all aspects of the Bitter Sweet release, and ensured the track listing covered everything essential from the era that would fit on one CD. This included the unique extended version of 'The Taste Of Your Tears', which had only been released on the very rare original UK CD issue of Bitter Sweet from the mid-80's. Various other mixes and versions of songs appear as bonuses as well. I included some of the single sleeve covers in the booklet, as well as some band photos from poster sleeves. When I performed the audio remastering, I tried to retain a balance between offering a good volume without sacrificing much in the way of dynamic range, which is far too common place these days.

King ended as a band after this album failed to make much impact in the US, which is said to be what Paul King was aiming for. But at least King ended on a very high note.

...finest moment.

We used to sing King on the terraces at Highfield Road back in the days. Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah..BLUES!! I guess you had to be there to appreciate that!

They had limited appeal to be honest and even I didn't really appreciate them until a few more years had drifted by. Still, it's now great to look back and relive some of the more cultured musical moments of the 1980s; with the re-release of this and Visage's Anvil. Splendid.
