5.0 out of 5 stars Death/Jazz/Prog Meisterwork From Pestilence., 23 Aug. 2012
This review is from: Spheres (Audio CD)
There was always an upward curve in the musical progression of Pestilence's albums during their 1988-1993 heyday.
The culmnination of this was their 4th album 'Spheres', issued on Roadrunner in 1993 to a mixed critical reaction which still lingers today - unjustifiably so.
The band's growing tendency towards melodic, progressive death metal (as evinced on their 1991 classic 'Testimony Of The Ancients'), reaches its logical conclusion on this musically startling, multi-layered, prog/death masterpiece.
Much like Cynic, Pestilence managed to combine the suppleness of jazz, the adventurism of prog-rock and the intricate, technical guitar arrangements which were the band's hallmark (especially on 'Testimony...').
The heavy use of guitar synth adds splashes of vivid colour which melt together with the tech-death guitar riffage which is rooted in the the band's 'classic' sound while, at the same time, allowing enough space for the band to wander off into true death-metal/jazz fusion territory.
The songs are short, yet give the impression of greater length due to the range of ideas which are expertly crafted together, as the band create a truly
dazzling array of sounds as washes of guitar synth create a prog-inspired backdrop which compliments the guitar-based arrangements perfectly.
They even find time to throw in three short instrumental interludes which are a perfect foil for the rest of the album, acting as stop-offs on the journey to fusion heaven.
One of the greatest, and most under-valued, metal albums of the past 20 years, essential listening for fans of Cynic as well as anybody who values creativity
in the often limited realm of death-metal. Try it.
