4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Tone
This record is a great demonstration of the gorgeous tone that Thad got out of his trumpet. Check out "I've Got A Crush on You". Thad does little more that play the melody straight with minimal embellishment or exageration. However, the sheer beauty of the playing takes the piece to a whole other level. Barry Harris plays equally superbly. Highly recommended. It's one if...

3.0 out of 5 stars A quality album that fails to rise to the heights anticipated.
Without doubt the five musicians on this disc are top ranked. Thad(deus) Jones was a lead trumpet player with the Count Basie band at this time (1956) and had featured extensively on the album "April In Paris" (indeed his solo on that record and this features the quote from "pop goes the weasel"). Here we hear the master trumpeter, whose tone must be one...

5.0 out of 5 stars April in Paris one of the best arrangements in jazz, 30 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Magnificent Thad Jones (Rudy Van Gelder Edition) (Audio CD)
A five star review to offset the 3 star one. The comment "the arrangements left me more than a little cold" left me more than a little gob-smacked. Are you kidding? The arrangement of April in Paris is just wonderful, one of the best in all jazz. The ultimate antidote to all the brash, soulless sounds that bombard our ears every day. One to relax deep into and enjoy the glory of the art of the arranger, the musicians and the superb sound engineering of the peerless Rudy Van Gelder. The opening interplay of Max Roach's cymbals with Percy Heath's and Barry Harris' simple contrapuntal riff immediately stops time and grabs the attention, then Thad's and Billie Mitchell's achingly beautiful harmonized theme floats in, giving way to Thad's soaring solo trumpet, handing over immediately to a brief and possibly even more soulful few bars from Billy Mitchell. Not to mention the ingenious way a familiar tune is transformed into something entirely new by a subtle change in note timing and emphasis. Is there a better 1 minute demonstration of the art of the arranger (and the sheer joy of sound of acoustic instruments) in all of music? Definitely in the "top 100 sounds to hear before you die" category.

I had this on vinyl many years ago, played it until it was almost white, before a friend at a party dispossessed me of it. Some friend. But, to be fair, it is a stunning set. Thad and Billy Mitchell were consumate musicians, add Barry Harris, Percy Heath and Max Roach, seven gorgeous tunes stunningly and you have a wonderful disc you'll love forever. And a day.

I was delightfully surprised by Thad's version of "April in Paris", thinking it would be very uptempo and quite fast, when it turned out to be very soul searching stuff indeed. The entire album has, for the most part, this same feel to it which makes it all ideal to relax to as well as concentrate on what is musically going on. Thad also played a part in Count Basie's big band, which you can hear courtesy of Essential Jazz Classics on "Chairman of The Board" and on "Battle Royal" with Duke Ellington's big band playing alongside Count Basie.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fine album, 19 May 2010

This record lives up to the expectations of the cover - it's raw, intense and sincere. Personally I like the slow numbers the most. If you're into clean, melodic bebop without too many frills but lots of interplay and good solid tunes then you won't be disappointed. I own probably 500 jazz records, and this goes straight into my personal top 50. If you like the musicians on display here I also highly recommend Midnight Blue by Kenny Burrell and Bass on Top by Paul Chambers.Bass on TopMidnight Blue: Remastered

3.0 out of 5 stars A quality album that fails to rise to the heights anticipated., 26 Sep 2014

Here we hear the master trumpeter, whose tone must be one of the fullest in jazz, outside of the constraints of a big band (he later formed his own band in conjunction with drummer Mel Lewis). The "head" is shared with Billy Mitchell on tenor sax, whilst the superb rhythm section comprises Barry Harris, Percy Heath and Max Roach.

It is difficult to criticise adversely such star musicians, but somehow, for me, the album fails to "cut the mustard", hence only three stars. Perhaps it's just a matter of personal taste. Listening, one admires the beauty of Jones' tone and the creativity of Barry Harris. There is a wonderful "bonus track" "Something To Remember You By" which is a duet with guitarist Kenny Burrell, recorded a week or so earlier.

Three stars seems a bit mean, but this is not a ground breaking album. Compared to the output of others at the same time (e.g. Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis) this is pedestrian.

The original album plus a couple of bonus tracks padding the CD out to 50 minutes of pure pleasure. Additional bonus of some excellent tenor sax from Billy Mitchell. Well researched 12 page booklet completes the offering. Get it!
