4.0 out of 5 stars Best Buy Mahler Box From Rattle & EMI
All Rattle's Mahler to date, boxed up robustly and with text and translations included in the booklet. I noted a slight error on the box, in so far as the First Symphony is not listed as being 'live' which it clearly is. In fact if this set has a definite weak spot, it is that very recording of Mahler's First Symphony. His first symphonic work, Das Klagende Lied, goes...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good overall
Any collection of Mahler's music is going to have a difficult job in maintaining a consistently high standard. The music is demanding and no conductor is going to bring everything off. It is better to get individual symphonies rather than a box set.

Generally the overall virtue of the set is that it is well recorded with few of the hiccups one sees in other...

I am not capable of going into detail about the performances but I can say that I find this a superb collection. Excellent value for money though of course music of this greatness and money do not go together.

I ignored several reviews which criticised EMI for their production standards - My mistake!

There are two problems:
1) The data tagging system used is not compatible with all music players. The index on every disk is the same 92 track list but only the first few tracks contain music - it's a mess.
2) The recordings have a very high dynamic range, which is a good thing, but the audio quality is poor on cheap audio systems. It is fine on my £2000 Denon / Keff set up but do read the other recording quality reviews.

If you only have a few years to live and you will only play these disks in an old fashioned, but high quality CD player that doesn't use the data tags, you should be fine. However, if you may want a recording you can use with upcoming technologies you could be disappointed.
