5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally Stunning, 30 Oct 2009

This review is from: Requiem (Messe des morts) (Audio CD)
Rich and varied emotionality with grand melodic lines interwoven between polyphonic choruses and homophonic chorales, with stunning singing by the Monteverdi Chorus. This work will transport you to an Angelic World. Breathtaking lyricism in an operatic style work full of emotional contrasts. The work sythesizes the style of Lully with Italinate type arias. This Gardiner recording is an extraordinary performance of an extraordinary work by the French Baroque composer André Campra (1660- 1744) born 28 years after Lully. The work itself is certainly a prime example of what Campra himself wrote in his book of motets, "the sole purpose of music is to raise the spirit towards God by reaching man's hearts". He certainly has succeeded in this requiem. This is a desert island recording. Also see: Campra: Requiem Mass /La Chapelle Royale Herreweghe

I had never heard of Campra before, shame on me, but like so many composers through the centuries who have produced good, or in this case great works, they have been 'lost' in the history of music. This work is of its time but also transcends it . Beauty can have both a particular, contemporary appreciation but can also show itself to every time and circumstance as demonstrating man's achievements and in this particular case the inspiration in the composers belief that he was offering his work to first to God.

I was stimulated by a recent BBC programme on Requiems to collect those mentioned and have found them to be beautiful and satisfying (I have not yet listened to them all though).
