5.0 out of 5 stars GG's Other-worldly Pianism!, 16 Nov 2008

This review is from: Glenn Gould Plays His Own Transcriptions Of Wagner Orchestral Showpieces (Audio CD)
Glenn Gould's own stranscription of Wagner's works is mesmerizingly complex and it displays finest and most delicate playing by him in the entire GG Editions. The other-worldly intricacy of Siegfried Idyll alone can make this cd worth owning, but coupled with incredibly dazzling performance of Meistersinger Overture & Götterdämmerung piano transctiption, it is a must for anyone after serious pianism!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gould's Wagner..., 12 Aug 2010

Gould's Wagner...
.
Glenn Gould wasn't merely a pianist: he was a polymathic artist: musician, composer, writer, broadcaster, and record producer.

Gould--the greatest pianist since Franz Liszt--was (like Liszt) also a transcriber of other composer's works.
Here we have Gould's own piano reductions of Wagner's operatic scores (Meistersinger; Götterdämmerung; and Siegfried).

Recorded in 1973, Gould's biographer Dr. K. Bazzana says, `His piano recording of the Siegfried Idyll--intimate, lyrical, tonally resplendent, immaculately paced--may be his greatest performance.'
Gould `sought to underscore the "languor" he thought implicit in the music': his transcription and performance is a `wondrous, dreamy meditation of piano playing.'

In the fractious Meistersinger and Götterdämmerung excerpts, Gould overdubbed himself to attain full four-handed realizations.
.
These recordings have been re-issued in various permutations along with Gould's orchestral Siegfried Idyll, but it is nice to have this disc with Gould's solo pianism alone.

This is some of the finest piano playing you are ever likely to hear, despite the short running time. Just listen to the final 2 or 3 three minutes of the Siegfried Idyll. While time appears to slow down, each chord is given the time and space to breathe and register on our consciousness. It is poised, effortless and serene pianism from a true genius. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gould - Brilliant, 11 Mar 2013

This series of Gould re releases are amazing, the quality of the recordings suggests they may not originally have been intended for release. For example the sound of Gould humming or thumping the the instrument... Bottom line is they are 'of their time' and totally engaging. Price is right too!

Wonderfully inventive. It is his dedication, devotion to the expression of music at such a deep level that sets him apart from other pianists of his age.
