5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This is a brilliant film i must have seen it multiple times. patrick swayze is gorgeous as johnny castle and jennifer Grey is just perfect as Baby. The dancing is brilliant and i always get hairs on the back of my neck in the final dance scene. There are lots of extras on this dvd including interviews, deleted scenes, etc. Just wonderful !

1.0 out of 5 stars Randy Tic Ding!
Patrick Swayze is hilariously miscast as brooding (i.e. he frowns a lot) dance instructor Johnny Castle and spends the entirety of this agonising 1960's pastiche mincing about in trousers so tight it's no surprise that his range of expressions can only veer from Mildly Pained to Pissing Razors. Love interest Baby (Jennifer Grey) seems to possess features that would easily...

5.0 out of 5 stars I've Had The Time of My Life, 5 Jan 2008
This is amazing. I have loved this film for long as I can remember and can barely believe that it is 20 years old!! It is still as fresh as it was when it came out 20 years ago and it's one of those films that you can watch time and time again without getting bored with it.
Great storyline, great characters, great actors and great music make this film one of the best films from the last 20 years.
The 20th Anniversary Edition is good. It has bonus features that you won't get anywhere else with interviews from the two main characters/actors as well as original auditions and lots more. Worth buying even if you own the original version before for the extra alone it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate chick flick, 4 Nov 2007
This really is the ultimate chick flick.
Men this is not really recommended for you..
Its about "Baby", a girl coming of age whilst coming up against very foreign problems to her: Abortion, love, sex, dancing, theft, and no longer being a daddys girl.
This is a great love story mixed in with a realisation about the nitty gritties of life.
This is a classic no matter how many years go by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, simply amazing - a real MUST see film, 16 Sep 2009

Right about the time i was 17 Dirty dancing came out. I didn't watch it as i saw it as a girl only film. Later, a good few years later i watched it on VHS and thought it was amazing.

I won't go into the story as that can be read elsewhere but i would comment on the wonderful soundtrack which really helps to make this a 'must see' film.

And if, like me, you are of the male gender PLEASE don't dismiss this as a chick flick as you will be missing a wonderful film. I won't spoilt the ending, in case you don't know what happens, but it has a fantastic ending and all in all if a great feel good film. I actually envy anybody who has not seen it yet as i'd like to go and watch it 'fresh' and be impressed all over again.

Do not miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hidden depths in this pop culture classic, 20 Oct 2008
By cathy earnshaw (Berlin, Germany) - See all my reviews

Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that you either love or hate. Watching it again over 20 years after its first release, it was funny this time around to register a social and cultural subtext and to recognise what a macho thug Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) really was: after he has beaten up the preppy waiter Robbie Gould, Baby doesn't seem worried at all that he might one day turn his fist on her; in fact she cuddles him tenderly! Baby (Jennifer Grey) was more sexually assertive than I had remembered: it is she and not Johnny who initiates the movement of their relationship onto the next level by laying her romantic feelings bare. Their growing intimacy might have been socially unusual - an unworldly daughter with political ideals from a wealthy, privileged family and a tough and taciturn dancing instructor who has grown up in much poorer surroundings - but it is an electric one, with palpable on-screen chemistry.

There are some wincingly corny moments that have now become cult and some intentionally funny lines that I'd missed or forgotten since the first time around. Grey occasionally becomes too overdramatic in her acting (although others might say that she's only emphasizing Baby's naivity); Swayze remains on the side of credibility, carrying his lines with intensity even when he has to say things like, "It's okay. Johnny's here. I'm never gonna let anything happen to you". Although the character of Johnny took on certain clichés of traditional masculinity - the muscular protector who is strong and sensual but emotionally silent - he embodies a new kind of hero since the classic roles are to a certain extent reversed: he is in the socially weaker position and aspires to develop Baby's qualities in himself, particularly her faith in personal and social change, as well as to be accepted and liked by her socially respected father.

It's sad to learn what the cast and crew have been up to since Dirty Dancing became a huge hit worldwide in the late 1980s. Many of them have now died, including the director Emile Ardolino (in 1993 of an AIDS-related illness), the actor who plays Robbie Gould (in 1991 of a heroin overdose) and Jerry Orbach who plays Baby's father (in 2004 of prostate cancer). The career of Jennifer Grey 'nosedived' after cosmetic surgery made her unrecognisable. Swayze went on to star in Ghost with Demi Moore, but could not shake off the brooding romantic tag that Dirty Dancing inevitably saddled him with. Following battles with alcoholism after the deaths of his father and manager as well as the suicide of his sister, he was diagnosed this year, as was widely reported, with pancreatic cancer.

This anniversary edition comes with some fascinating extras - the original trailer, interviews with key cast and crew members, a collection of goofs, and the original screen tests with Jennifer Grey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine dancing, but dirty?, 18 Mar 2009
By Robert K. Furrer "Swissboy" (Sempach, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
It is still one of my all-time favorites. Jennifer Grey as the half innocent teenager has such a captivating smile that it's hard not to fall for her. After more than 20 years, this movie does show its age in many respects. But I still love the music, the dancing, and that stunning final scene. The second DVD provides some interesting insights into how this movie could also have been done. Viewing those scenes makes me glad they were not used!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 10 Feb 2009
This is such an amazing film.

DJ Dave Boring "I'm the Chairman of the Bored" seems to have his head up his a**e when he talks about this film. The guy has no taste.

This film is truly amazing. I own this film, I love it and yes, I'm a bloke. So what!
