In these enlightened times, a movie such as Cabin in the Sky - which is heavily laden with racial stereotypes - seems awkwardly out of place. However, before we all jump on the political correctness bandwagon, it's worth remembering that the movie was made during WW2, and that Civil Rights Movements were some 20 or so years in the future.
Much has been written about the plot, so I won't focus on that. I will say, however, that this movie is a tour-de-force of talent. It marked Vincente Minelli's directorial debut, and he did a fine job. Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne and Ethel Waters all play their parts brilliantly. If there was any animosity between Lena and Ethel, it was probably down to the following fact: Ethel fought tooth and nail to climb the showbiz ladder, whereas Lena was the first African-American actress to be groomed specially for Hollywood. Ms Horne had specially designed gowns and mingled with the upper echelons of MGM. The moviemakers even created a special make up range for her in an effort to pass her off as an exotic Latin American belle. Lena refused to disrespect her race by denying her heritage.
Anyway, back to the film. It's Ethel Water's character, Petunia, that I warm to the most. She may have been downtrodden, and reduced to scrubbing floors. However, there's a down-to-earth warmth that radiates from her. Her rendition of "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" is superb. The late Waters was a remarkable, versatile performer, and it's a shame that she's not as well known among the masses as Lena.
As for Lena's Georgia Brown, she's nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful. Ms Horne was something of a WW2 pin-up. She tempts the viewers (and the censors, no doubt!) with her sexy lingerie, and isn't shy to show off a good bit of thigh! The only other African American woman who showed this much flesh was Josephine Baker, but she was doing her thing in Paris!
The songs by Duke Ellington are great. Also look out for a young Louis Armstrong - he plays one of Lucifer's hilarious angels!
Cabin in the Sky is fine musical - a classic. So take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and enjoy one of the finest musicals of its era.

This is a film with a cast that is entirely composed of Afroamericans. I do not know the reason for this decision despite how much I've read about it. But this has absolutely no relevance. The fact is that it is a movie Minelli-Freed team that gave us the best musicals in the history of cinema. All participants in this film are stars. Ethel Waters, a really underrated singer, somewhat increased weight. Lena Horne, Ellington, Armstrong, MacQueen and, of course, Rochester, all are fine. On the plot others had commented. The copy looks great, good job of restoration. It is a milestone in the history of American musical film and should see it.

I remembered seeing this film a long time ago and worried that it might not live up to expectations but it went way beyond them. There is a note at the beginning of the film about the presentation of racial stereotypes which puts forward the view that to alter the film now would be to deny that such prejudices did not exist. It would indeed be a pity if that puts people off watching this film. If you love musicals, there is a vast array of talent on screen - from the always sublime Ethel Waters to the unexpected pleasure of John William Sublett distinctive dancing. This film is packed with stand out songs and terrific perfomances all round. A rare treat.

This is an excellent production of a classic music film. While the story might seem a little quaint today there can be no doubt that it was well inteneded at the time. The musical performances are first calss

This DVD was fantastic! It's the first film ever directed by Minnelli, Judy Garland's husband and Lisa's father. Lorna Horn is fantastic and has a great voice!

If you love comedy musicals, this is definitely one to catch. Exceptional acting, wonderful settings, and good old southern music, make this movie a must have. The storyline of salvation and removal of temptation is brilliant, and there a many great comedy moments, particularly, the arguement over little Joes soul, by lucifer jnr, and the angels. Absolutely Fantastic!

Thank god we've (hopefully) come along way since this movie was made.the awful stereotyping that was the norm in those days makes you wonder whether you should watch it or not. Watch it and after a while you can laugh WITH the actors at the crassness of the way they are expected to portray their race, then you can relax and just take in the incredible talent thats on show here.lene horne, ethel waters, louis armstrong, duke ellington and all directed by vincente minnelli!a goody with a few ,understandable, reservations.nb although this is a zone 1 if you dont have a multi regional player there ARE sites on the internet that show you how to convert very easily.funnily enough the cheaper the dvd player the easier to do
