This review is from: Stravinsky: The Rake's Progress (Audio CD)
It's an opera that is unclassifiable; of course it's obvious where it's heart is but the style, parody, and the honest humanity of parts of it can't be anything other than Stravinsky .. Though I believe Mozart would have had an approving chuckle. The sound quality itself is astonishing in clarity given the age of the original recording. The only gripe for me is that the orchestra is a little too set back in balance compared to the very forward voices. However, the advantage of this is that the libretto can be followed easily just by listening, no need for a booklet. But after a few listenings I do miss the colour of the orchestra that you would get with a modern recording, and let's face it Stravinsky's score fizzes with colour and contrast.

The lead parts: Nick Shadow, Tom Rakewell and Anne Truelove are beautifully sung yet remaining characterful. The whole cast and choir is excellent, but those three are my favourites.

The best thing about the recording is of course that the composer himself is the conductor. Under his swift baton the opera sparkles. A must have for Stravinsky and opera fans alike.
