5.0 out of 5 stars Slide v Digital, 9 Jan 2011
This review is from: Fujifilm Velvia 50 120 Film Pack of 5 (Electronics)
I have now returned to slide film for landscape and nature photography.
Projected digital [even with the best projectors] doesn't compare with transparencies for the sheer quality of the image.
I use Simda and Leitz slide projectors, results are stunning especially using 120 slide film.

Velvia, a legendary film with colours which can only be produced by this film.
Digital Landscape photographers all look to mimic the look of this film - which is still used by Pro's in the Landscape Photography field.

I've been using this film in 35mm, 6x6 and 645 MF for a number of years and it's beautiful. It has dark soft velvety blacks, punchy reds, yellows and greens and vibrancy which is wonderful to see.

On a light table or projected nothing comes close to it. It has even been used in Film - What Dreams May Come [DVD] [1998] is filmed in Velvia and you can just see the magic of it.

With a decent scanner such as an Epson V500Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner (6400dpi, 3.4 Opt Density, USB 2.0) (or higher models such as V700) with a transparency adaptor you'll get huge crisp clean scans - I compared a high res 35mm scan of Velvia 50 portrait to a full size image of a shot taken with a Leica X1 and the Velvia shot holds it own, it holds as much detail with contrast dependant upon the lens - I used a Contax G2 with 45mm Planar T* Zeiss lens, so it was tack sharp with beautiful contrast - it has better colour, and of course it has more grain - but thats also the beauty of Film.

120 film is even better, beautiful and very high res and detailed, depending upon format and lens again!

You can pick up Medium Format or quality 35mm gear for dirt cheap, and they'll go on for years and years with the image quality dependant upon your lens and light meter and on the SCANNER you use - I can only imagine what a drum scan would be like!

Avoid Velvia for mainly people shots and portraits - though if you're abroad and the locals wear colourful clothing - or for Indian weddings - it works!

its very high contrast, so you've got to meter carefully.

Velvia 50 is slow, for more general use I'd go for Velvia 100.

Velvia 50 has marginally better colour in my opinion, but the extra stop in 100 means you can comfortably shoot handheld while travelling.

Velvia 100F is very nice, but a bit muted compared to the other two, so I'd only got for 100F if it's substantially cheaper.

Well, what more can I say? If you're into photography and have a DSLR, grab a decent film camera, put in a roll of Velvia and enjoy the results as it is beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Legendary Fujichrome Velvia, 16 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Fujifilm Velvia 50 120 Film Pack of 5 (Electronics)
Large (120) format colour transparencies are perhaps the last frontier where digital can't even hope to compete with well executed analogue photography. The Fujichrome Velvia 50 with its fine grain emulsion is particularly suited to natural light conditions. Now that, sadly (tragically) Kodakchrome 120 slide films are no longer produced, this product leads the market.
I would like to add here that it is not too easy to get hold of this film material and when my order was lost in the post in the first instance, I was worried. However, after a brief exchange of notes, Jeff Scowen Photography, Birmingham (via Amazon.co.uk) sent a replacement free of charge which arrived safely and quickly. Very professional and generous service. A great source of rare and high quality analogue film materials.

I've always loved Fuji Velvia (in 135-35mm format) and am about try it in Medium Format for the first time! - I know Fuji won't let me down! ...

Having recently become increasingly disappointed with digital, I'm returning to this technology which has years of priceless development behind it - Join me, eh?!
