I'm really surprised this has not been reviewed previously as it is not a new collection. I have read some of the other reviews on Discovery Channel documentaries which say that they were filmed a long time ago (70's) and that they have been recently (2005) compiled into box set DVD's.

However, although not as slick as the BBC's Attenborough nature DVD's, I think this lot of DVD's is really excellent value for money and the knowledge they contain would do nobody any harm to know. The DVD's are:

(1) Journey to the Centre of the Earth,
(2) Living in Extremes,
(3) Understanding Oceans,
(4) Land of the Mammoth,
(5) Ice Age Survivors,
(6) Spirits of the Rainforest,
(7) The Frozen Kingdom and
(8) Amazing Earth.

I don't know when they were made but they are entrancing, informative and fascinating. As an example, the DVD titled "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" looks at the film of the same name based on the book by Jules Verne. It discusses historically what Jules Verne wrote nearly two hundred years ago and what the reality actually is as a comparison. It discusses scientific stuff like magnetic pole reversal and other mind bending questions. It demonstrates what would happen if you actually tried to drill a hole through from Miami to Perth in Australia. Its scientists laugh as they try to work out if various options would be viable and if not, why not etc... Did you know that the metal core, both solid and molten sections, contain about 1% pure gold. This might not seem that amazing but if all that gold in the earth's core was extracted and piled upon all the landmass of earth we would all be standing up to the height of our knees in pure gold? Wonderful stuff! Its easy to watch, utterly fascinating and there are loads of different scientists (from all corners of the earth - American British, Australian, Swedish etc...) giving their opinions on different subjects, not just David Attenborough's dulcet tones throughout. This set is so cool anybody could enjoy it from curious six year olds to grandads and mums. We're going to be watching these for a long time to come. Don't hesitate to buy it and then just enjoy it when there's nothing interesting on the TV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and bargainous boxset!, 27 May 2010

High quality set of DVDs featuring programs from the Discovery Channel. Fascinatingly produced, and unlike so many of the Discovery Channel programs, not completely obsessed with reproduction.

On the second DVD, there is however a strangely extended feature on the behaviour of whelks which makes you feel like you should be covering your children's eyes! There are a few other parts which can make for unsettling viewing, such as frankly unnecessary footage of tribesmens naughty bits, an amourous pair of wolves, and some geological features that don't exactly overstretch the imagination as to what they are meant to symbolise. My young daughter repeatedly asked me difficult questions at various points, which made me think I might have done better with a Lazy Town DVD.

However, if you can cope with this possibility, there is much to enjoy on the 8 DVDs, and they really are a bargain price!

Fantastic lifeforms that you've never seen before, amazing nature, animals and Earth. I wasn't too sure how this box-set would be but couldn't resist the price so took a gamble. I'm only half way through but the amazing things about the earth and nature that I've discovered in this set is astounding. It's from the Discovery Channel so is a good fact based series.
