5.0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive collection, 25 July 2008

This review is from: Love On Your Side: The Best Of The Thompson Twins (Audio CD)
This 2007 collection is probably the best of the many Thompson Twins compilations. Too many of the others seem to be reliant on alternative or remixed versions of their songs, and this one not only uses the original versions but also includes a very generous selection of Thompson Twins album tracks.

This is a double CD package, with a nice cardboard cover wrapping up the plastic case. Good sleeve notes. The first CD contains all the hit singles in their original form and length, together with a few album tracks. The second CD is a chronological sequence of album tracks.

Between the two CDs we are given two songs from "Set" an early Thompson Twins album; the entirety of "Quick Step and Side Kick" which was their first commercially successful album; the entirety of "Into the Gap" which was their most successful album both musically and commercially; all except tracks 8 & 9 of their good but less successful "Future Days" album, and all except tracks 2,7,8 & 9 of "Close to the Bone", effectively their swansong album.

This double CD is so low cost now (under £5 currently) that even if you're only looking for the hits, it makes an excellent value purchase. The risk of buying the deceptively titled "Greatest Hits" single CD is that the versions of songs on that album aren't the original hits but alternate or remixed versions. That's fine if that is what you are looking for, but this should be indicated in the title of the album.

However, many of the group's best songs weren't released as singles, so with this collection you get the best of the album tracks as well. For instance, every song on "In the Gap" was great, and you get all of those here in their original form with great sound clarity. So this album appeals to both the greatest hits fans and the more serious fans.

Many of these songs I haven't heard for 25 years and it was great to hear them again. They still sound as fresh and full of joy in 2008 as they did in the early 80s. The Thompson Twins were often quite quirky and cheeky in their lyrics and singing, a quality perhaps not evident from probably their best known single "Hold Me Now" which is nevertheless a great song. Other songs I love are "In the Name of Love", "Love on Your Side", "Sister of Mercy", "No Peace for the Wicked", "The Gap" and "King for a Day". The low point is probably their version of The Beatles "Revolution", but everything else in this collection is good or great.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BAND TIME FORGOT...., 23 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Love On Your Side: The Best Of The Thompson Twins (Audio CD)
By golly do i love late 70s,early to mid eighties music. This seems to be a time when us Brits ruled, selling crateloads of albums at home and in the big US of A.Gary Numan,Heaven 17,P.I.L,Adam Ant,Visage,Tears For Fears,Japan,The Associates,Echo And The Bunnymen....jeez so many good tunes, amazing bands from the credible to the naff. But get this even the "naff" bands were incredible....Flock Of Seagulls,Nik Kershaw,Sigue Sigue Sputnik and this bunch the Thompson Twins.
I think back in the day music journalists weilded far more power then they do nowadays,a lot of bands were savaged critically but really this supposed "new pop" ultimately delivered tunes that have proved resilient, indestructable.Yeah the Twins looked terrible but man Hold Me Now,Love On Your Side,Doctor! These are monster tunes that bash their way into your brain.A fizzy pop soundtrack to a world where Thursdays meant Top Of The Pops,Back To The Future played at the cinema,no internet,no mobiles...if you had a remote control boy you we're living in luxury!
I have determined to look at the much derided 80s as my emotional home.Sod the ugly facebooked present. From my view the 80s produced a true golden age of pop,pop singles, pop albums when music actually sold and was not yet reduced to a button pushing, downloading commodity.
Fun,pretentious,catchy...the performers seemed to be bursting with ideas.Yeah some were awful but i give credit to anyone proposing an idea then recurgitating formula.Kids dressing like Boy George{anyone seen Grange Hill where Michelle Fowler is done up George style?ESSENTIAL viewing} or Thompson Twins....beautiful stuff.Phone ins with Mike I Wear Chinos Read on Swap Shop....true pop.
Unbelievably Thompson Twins according to sleeve notes sold a whopping 50 million records, played arenas....but they seemed to have been wiped from musical memory.I suppose its considered forgettable, disposable pop.....just the stuff i love.
This is a great value cd,36 tunes, cheesy synths, with the obligatory late career decline its awesome.LOVE DOCTOR!DOCTOR!Right i am off to hairspray the mullet, roll my blazer sleeves up and do some robotic dance moves to this cd.
By myself.
In the living room, dog looking at me very strangely indeed.......i saw you there, just standing there....

A decent, cheap compilation that covers most of the bases of this critically-underrated band. The Twins were always inventive and oddball enough to stand out from most of their bland eighties contemporaries, which is why it's doubly amazing that none of their albums has ever received the deluxe reissue treatment.
Their time may now be well gone, but there's enough of interest here to warrant re-appraisal.

PS. I was a bit premature with this review. 'Quick Step & Side Kick' and 'Into the Gap' were reissued March 2008, complete with remixes. Get those albums for the full story, but consider this Best Of as a primer.

I have to say this is well worth the price as it has all the big hits on it, but for me it is missing a lot of my favorite tracks and singles by them, singles missed off for me were Squares and Triangles, She's in Love with Mystery, Perfect Game, Animal Laugh, Make Believe, Runaway, Roll Over, Nothing In Common, Sugar Daddy, Bombers in the Sky, Come Inside, The Saint and Play With Me (Jane), if they had been on it, it would have been a definitive best of and would have got 5 stars, but as I can't see that happening any time soon, this is the best one out there.

This is a great deal considering all the songs you get for such a low price. Thompson Twins will always be one of my favorite 80s band; they made such great music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Memories, 25 Aug 2010

Great to listen to an album and be transported back to the 80s and great memories of growing up. Have been looking for a compilation of Thompson Twins and decided on this and glad I did. It has all the hits which is more than I thought they had especially when hard to find CDs of their work.
Unfortunate for me parents stored all my albums in a damp garden shed when I lived abroad and came home to a depleted music collection and gradually glad that some of the more indie bands of the 80s seem to be having a revival so CDs are becoming easier to pick up.

An excellent good value-for-money double CD of Thompson Twins hits and selected album tracks. There are omissions of course, but then there usually are. Overall sound quality is very good. Recommended for fans.

A Pop force in the 80's, TTT seem to have fallen of the radar in those TV and Radio programmes that celebrate the 80's decade. IF you remember them, this is a great compilation. If you like 80's pop and dont know TTT give them a listen, you won't regret it
