5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable, 24 July 2007
This review is from: Sings Doctor Dolittle/Born Walden Robert Cassoto (Audio CD)
It has finally happened - the wonderful Walden Robert cassotto album is appearing on CD in its entirity. Bits of it have popped up over the last few years, but this will be the first release of the whole album. It's darin's first protest album and so don't expect any finger snapping, snarling lyrics about Mack The Knife. This is about Vietnam, Robert Kennedy, the environment and prison mistreatment. It is a wonderous tour de force but sadly sold very little. Here's hoping it makes more of a dent on CD.

Dr Dolittle ain't half bad either! There are some classics on here too, although the first side of the album was all ballads which kind of gets monotonous after a while. But After Today, When I Look In Your Eyes, Beautiful Things and Talk To The Animals are brilliant performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars An All-Time Classic, 26 Sep 2012
This review is from: Sings Doctor Dolittle/Born Walden Robert Cassoto (Audio CD)
Forget Dr Doolittle, the 2nd album contained on this double is one of the great undervalued classics of the 60s. I know so few people who have even heard of this album, let alone Darin's work beyond Mack the Knife and, er, The Sea, but this really deserves a greater audience. Folksy without being twee, funky without losing sight of meaning, it's a really unique album that gets better with every play, and has been among the most played at my house for a couple of years now.

'Commitment' is also really good, but 'Born Robert...' is a masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooray!!, 30 July 2007
This review is from: Sings Doctor Dolittle/Born Walden Robert Cassoto (Audio CD)
At last! A CD release we have been dying for. I had to buy "Bobby Darin Born WRC" on vinyl as I'm a recent Bobby Darin convert. This shows just what a talented songwriter and vocalist he is. Plays a mean harmonica too. Now we can only pray that "Commitment" by Bob Darin finds its way onto CD too.

I guess pairing this album with Dr. Dolittle just shows off BD's amazing versatility. Though some might think it very "uncool", BD really admired Newley and Bricusse, whose amazing ouevre is being re-evaluated today.

A very good double album CD, the first half is Darins takes on the original Doctor Dolittle movie's soundtrack composed entirely by Leslie Bricusse who also did the script for the movie, the moive is brill I have it on DVD an managed to get hold of the original soundtrack on CD, but Darin adds something to the Doctor Dolittle songs that isn't shown in the movie. He takes 'Beautiful Things' shortens it slightly and makes it much more of a swinging jazz tune which is cool, the dolittle takes are good songs and well worth the money. The other album is superior as it is all written by the legend himself, this is worth the price it costs so i advise to give it a try, you cannot get any better then this for easy listening swinging songs.
