I was looking for a simple to set up DVD Writer, which would sit happily on top of the desk. This DVD writer arrived very quickly took no time at all to set up, just plugged it in and I was away. I installed the CD/DVD writing software that came bundled with it and I was off. It works a treat, fast and efficient.

As a Mac user, I expected there to be at least one compatibility issue with this product, as the description said 'Windows only'.. I bought it anyway, taking a risk.

When is arrived a day or two later, I found that I ws wrong, it just plugged in via USB and BINGO everything worked. I highly recommend this product. I don't know how it works on the windows side of things, but it DEFINITELY works on Mac OS X (10.5.6), I was using toast Titanium to burn and also DVD Studio Pro, they both seemed to get along fine with each other. you may need to refresh your drives location in your burning/ripping software etc, but it will work with Mac.

Please note, I wrote this review mainly for Mac users who are confused as to whether or not it will work with Mac OS X, I will say again, it does work.

spent hours looking for an external dvd rewriter, this piece of kit is brill, easy use and install and the price brill.speed of burning is far superior to my 2 internal lg dvd drives.look no further than this, beleive me!

Plug it in, turn it on and you're ready. I haven't bothered with their software as I have a good recording programme. I also haven't tried burning DVD's yet either, but a music CD was done in just over 3 minutes.
Excellent and recommended. Only slight downside is it's size. It is a bit big, but otherwise spot on! Amazon's service was first class once again.

Very pleased with my DVD writer. Bought this one after reading all the other good reviews. I too just plugged it in . My Real Player automatically downloaded the neccessary software (Roxio). Just made my first DVD and played it on T V. which is just what I wanted - to be able to download video clips from Youtube etc and play them on T V. - Great.

Initially I couldn't get this machine going as it simply rejected any blank DVD I placed in the drive. Having tried several brands of DVD, scouring the net for help and contacting Freecom by email (I did get some quick replies but most seemed to blame the blank discs!) a free download trial of some alternative software showed that the accompanying Roxio software was the villain. Doing a little research it appears to be a slightly unpopular piece of software so Freecom lose a couple of marks from me for using it.

Consequently, I've had to buy some additional software that I didn't plan on. However, the machine itself is working really well thus far and overall not a bad purchase.

I'd basically advise any potential purchaser to beware the accompanying Roxio software.

Great unit, as with some of the other reviewers, I did not use the software that came with the product I just plugged it in and my 3 year old lap top recognised it(windows xp).I have used Nero to create a DVD slide show and Fireman to make a data cd and also to back up 7gb onto a dual layer DVD no problems with any of the systems picking up the unit. I am looking for an external hard drive and Freecom is high on my list.

Needed a dvd writer for my old Apple Powerbook G4 (running 10.4.9) to burn discs from iDVD... After checking out varying reviews about whether this was Mac-compatible, decided to give it a go. It works fantastic -just plug and play and away you go. Absolutely no probs. Ordered using free delivery at 10am and it arrived 9.30am the next day. Would absolutely recommend this. Brilliant service from Amazon and great product.

My boyfriend needed a new cd drive for his MAC Laptop as his has broken.
I ordered this and it was so easy to start using.
Just plug in and away you go! no need to install anything, plays CD's and CD-ROM's, and DVDs. havent tried re writing cds/dvds yet but all is ok.

The only bad point would have to be its size as it is a bit big.

I purchased this drive to go with a laptop that had a broken cd-dvd drive, it is really fast at burning both cds and dvds, never misses no buffer underruns or the like. If you need an external drive this freecom is the way to go
