okay, so it's not necessarily as immediate as some mclusky albums, but after a few listens I realised that this is probably the most important album that's been released this year. with alternative music getting more and more prosaic and mediocre (I mean come on, have the killers or bloc party ever done anything that hasn't been done a thousand times before?) along comes the future of the left to deliver an emetic to this sickly rock scene. you're not going to hear a more forward thinking and direct album, and the lyrics manage to be emotionally honest while being thoroughly obtuse. if they had slightly more pop on the album it would be a 5 star review, but that's just splitting hairs.

oh yeah, you might want to know what it sounds like...let's say the pixies, does that help?

5.0 out of 5 stars Well over a year later and I am still listening!!, 27 Aug 2008
This review is from: Curses (Audio CD)
Others have compared them to the previous bands they were, but I don't want to go to down that route, the simple fact that I was addicted to the album from the moment I got it, I bought every single to hear more of them and this album captures the true raw sound of them (I should know I've seen them maybe 6 times in the last 2 years). Every note is played with utter conviction, there is no playing the rockstar, this man andy means every word!! You should read his myspace blogs, they are genius!!! Can't wait for this weekends offset festival, bring it on!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pixies?, 19 Oct 2007
This review is from: Curses (Audio CD)
Maybe. Better than the Pixies, though. There's a bit of Stump there, too, or perhaps that just the lunatic lyrics. Falkous certainly had the Mclusky sound, bound and gagged in the back of a Transit van, and it's released on this album. This is my Album of the Year. If you liked Mclusky, you'll love this. It's not a continuation, by any means, but it is progress. Future of the Left are marching into territory that was sniffed out by Mclusky. Albini might be miffed that the stench of production lingers around Curses but it's all the better for it. This album is solid and polished while remaining exciting and dynamic.

After the first few listens my favourite track is Manchasm, gloriously daft and exhilirating. With the refrain "Audience, please! Every minute matters!" I hope Falkous has built his crowd-control and admonishments into his set and that Future of the Left gigs won't be sapped of their energy by bickering with the audience. I can't wait to see them live. Rhymes with hive.
