5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid
I read this, and many others by the same author, when I was in my teens; it was a very welcome surprise to find it in the Kindle Store.
This is a well-written adventure story with some wonderful characters and a tense plot. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Badly dated attitudes
Racist, misogynist and often dull, but an interesting enough story. Probably. Haven't actually finished it yet as I keep putting it on one side to read more captivating titles.

Rider Haggard wrote about what he knew (Africa and the Zulus in particular). AQ is an endearing hero. The stories move at pace with great excitement. What's not to love? Umslopogaas is an unforgettable character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic adventure., 21 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Allan Quatermain (Kindle Edition)
This was part of an omnibus edition of 50 Rider Haggard stories (free) and is reviewed in that product. This is one of the front runners in the ethos of exploration, mysticism, and scifi in late victorian times. At times it seems overfull of related detail (e.g. how to plan a wagon trek) but there is plenty of tribal plotting and 'blood and guts' (literaly!) to keep one turning the page. If one wants to do some more intelectual digging comparisons with H G Wells, George Bernard Shaw, John Buchan and even Tolkien and the emigre Lenin, are there to be explored ,

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Favourite Re-visited, 4 Feb 2013

Read most of the books by this author many years ago, and was able to re-visit these in the Kindle version. Just as interesting as I remember them, and even better that it was free to download.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good classic., 30 Sep 2012

Excellent product, made available for free by Amazon. Downloaded very smooth and operated on my smartphone without any problem. Good old-fashioned story - one of the classics. Interesting to compare the style with more modern work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little peek into the past!, 8 Feb 2012

A well constructed and good old fashioned adventure, with enough descriptive narrative to immerse the reader and capture the imagination.

Maybe a little too romantic in some places, but then maybe I am just not romantic enough! Other than that this would be a 5*.

I find it hard to believe that I read this and King Solomon's Mines as a child. The language is certainly from another age. This reproduction for the Kindle is very good. I would recommend this, for nostalgia if nothing else.
