This is a beautiful bit of kit for your kitchen. Easy to use as there is no 'pouring lip' on the lid as with so many other cafieteres. Stainless steel cage comes up a treat when washed, if you are using it to serve coffee after a dinner party for example, grips the glass beaker well and feels solid.

This coffee maker is a beautiful design but the filter system was terrible - I had to go out and buy a new filter disc because the one supplied was so poor, bent, badly made and inefficient. For a £90 item this was terrible! Also the metal cage was so tight to the glass container that it produced a scratch up the glass as I removed it - and Alessi says that you should not use the glass if scratched!
Very sad, since I have had the 8-cup version for nearly 20 years and it is fantastic. What's happened Alessi?

There are several flaws in the design of this cafeterie, the glass container is retained by one of the metal spines next to the handle which is bent at an angle. This acts kind of like a kind of spring, but being solid stainless steel it makes for a very tight fit. Removing or re-inserting the glass will result in scratching the glass, the unit is supplied with cardboard packing material underneath the glass, so you will have to do this at least once.
The second problem is the metal filter which is very rough, with small bits of metal that stick out at odd angles, the filters sold by bodum are an order of magnitude better than this.
The third problem is that the metal base can get very hot, so it can't be placed directly onto a wooden table, it also cant be placed on a stove top and does not come with a coaster or any other work around.
The capacity of these units are measured in american 'cups', which are about 200 or 250 ml) so an 8 cup will make 3 or 4 large mugs of coffee.
The box and packaging are very high quality and this unit was purchased direct from Amazon, so I don't think it was a fake, I returned it for a refund.
Alessi do make some very good kitchen items, particularly the Richard Sapper designs, this is not one of them.

It looks gorgeous, but at the end of the day it is a cafetiere, albeit at a premium price.
Anyone know where to get a spare glass beaker?
