so much potential, ruined by idiotic characters
on 12 July 2012
This will contain MAJOR spoilers, as it is hard to express my opinion without them. I know that al lot of people are not going to agree with me, but here goes nothing.
First off I was very excited to see this film, being a huge fan of arthouse, grindhouse, exploitation, sleaze, slasher, and zombie films. Boy was I disappointed.
It all started out rather well, and I was pleased by the story, but the pure fact that some of the characters in this movie are so dumb, made it difficult to enjoy. I mean, I've seen some dumb cops in a lot of movies, but the detective in this film takes the cake - I can only assume he is brain-dead. I mean let's see some of the examples of stupidity involved:
After 7 murders in cold blood, witnesses placing Francesco at the scene of the crime, and no alibi you would think the visit from the cop would go a little differently. First off, the cop doesn't believe Francesco was the killer (no reason is given for this), but instead wants to question his dumb mute assistant about the murders. However, while on his way to question him, another body turns up (at the feet of the murder suspect), and the cop all but forgets why he was there in the first place. Later on he HANDS BACK evidence to Francesco which places him at the scene of yet more murders, because he suspects someone else. Even later in the film after Francesco has shot and murdered a nun and 2 doctors in cold blood at a hospital, the detective see's Francesco (at the hospital! And remember he has already been linked to a number of murders at this point) walking around with a gun and says `the murder has struck again. Oh good, at least you've got a gun to defend yourself' to which Francesco's reply is `I DID IT!!!!!' which the cop and everyone in the entire hospital decides to ignore.
In other ridiculous scenes you have a man puking on a girl, which the girl, the detective and the mayor don't seem to care about in the slightest, and neither does the guy whose motorcycle she jumps on all covered in puke. You've got an apparent murder victim, which even the coroner declares as DEAD after an autopsy, who is actually somehow not dead, and simply wakes up a number of days later. And considering Francesco KNOWS that the dead come back to life after 7 days of dying, he sure finds it surprising when some of them actually do climb out of the grave; I mean if it is his job to kill them again 7 days later, you'd think he would keep better track of who he is burying and when they died. In another ridiculous scene you have the detective clear Francesco of yet another murder, because the victim had intercourse shortly before her death, and apparently the whole town knows he is impotent (which actually he isn't) so he couldn't have committed the murder. Yet another scene sees a young woman (who has a phobia of male genitals) tell Francesco that her boss raped her, but then she let him make love to her to make up for it, and now she can't get enough and she is marrying the guy (all told with a smile on her face).
The zombies all seem to be very inconsistent, some reanimated as mute monsters, while one girl comes back exactly the same as she were when alive; just more hokem which really lost my interest.
You can probably see that I didn't like this film, and may question my taste, but I've seen movies that are really bad, but a lot more enjoyable than this. I watched Cannibal Terror a few weeks ago, and I enjoyed it more (and that movie was pretty awful).
Unfortunately, there were a few interesting ideas, but they just fell flat or were not excited well enough to make much difference.
I'll give it 1 star for the cinematography and another for Anna Falchi topless as she is actually stunning. If this film had been made in the late 70's I may have given it another star, but for a mid-90's work it is not acceptable.
With regards to the disc (Shameless release), the picture quality is pretty good, and the sound was acceptable. I didn't bother with the extras because I couldn't bear to spend any more time with this movie.
