5.0 out of 5 stars German 8-Bit Electronic Space-Dub anyone?, 3 May 2008
This review is from: Foundation Bit (Audio CD)
Disrupt was one of many fantastic surprises to scoot my way in 2007.
I'm not a fanatic of electronic music. Barring the odd special album that comes out now and again usually find it to be cold and devoid of the organic warmth I like to hear in music. I also an not an avid listener of reggae or dub; granted I've got a few Third World, Marley and Sceintist albums but that's really as far as it goes.
Now who would have thought combining the two would produce such immense results. Obviously this is nothing new; dub has been around in electronic music for years especially of the ambient variety, but Disrupt is something special.

It, in essence, is 8-bit electronic dub. Whatever that is - I like it, a lot!
Foundation Bit is brimming with spiky, ostensibly lo-fi blips and bleeps that could have come straight from old school 80s computer games. All this is laid on top of beautiful reverb drenched dub beats and heavy, rumbling basslines. Piano & horn stabs echo away in true King Tubby style; basslines have infinite levels of depth; everything is smothered in rich reverb. It's dirty and yet it's so crisp.

What makes it so special is it's completely devoid of vocals aside from the odd spoken sample, and it's catchy and memorable as hell. Each rhythm is different; each bassline stamps it's presence on your brain and wont relent until the next irrestisable bass transmission.

Tracks like The Stars My Destination, Blast You To Bits and Foundation Bit are the unsung heroes of electronic music; whilst they're danceable, they're not uptempo enough to creep into DJ sets and it's possibly too heavy and spacey for dub purists to get into. It's a weird one reserved for people who are seriously into their bassy, dub infused electronic music or those who simply know quality when they hear it.

Just too bad I got Foundation Bit too late for it to enter into my best of 2007 lists; it would have ranked very highly indeed. Here's to Disrupt for 2008.

I've not much to say about this,
apart from that it's one of the
most 'listenable' albums I own.
nigh on perfect.
