5.0 out of 5 stars Empirical - the future of jazz?, 20 July 2007

This review is from: Empirical (Audio CD)
If you are in any way a fan of cutting edge modern jazz buy this album. Empirical are a young firey British band who somehow seem to have absorbed the history of jazz in their short lives & fashioned something original & exciting from it. Live they are even more astonishing & I strongly recommend that you get to see them if you are able.

The album is packed full of original compositions, superb playing & the sense that these guys are the real deal. Very highly recommended....

5.0 out of 5 stars This is really special!, 6 Jan 2008

bbjazz (London, England) - See all my reviews

A marvellous first release from the band that truly carries the flame for British Jazz. Although young, they have already established their own sound and know exactly where they're headed. There are no weak links - the rhythm section of bassist Neil Charles and drummer Shaney Forbes are fierce and swing like crazy, and pianist Kit Downes, saxophonist Nathaniel Facey and trumpeter Jay Phelps are always inventive and expressive. But they've got such good tunes to be creative with! Courtney Pine produces and engineers and does an extremely good job. It's no surprise that this album was the critics' favourite for 2007. It's my favourite too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well integrated, 17 May 2008

They are obviously young and finding their own style but you can hear the tidy integration of Ornette Coleman and of Steve Coleman - different styles but cogent nontheless. If you are a fan of Kenny G (not the classy Garrett but the other one) then steer well clear of this album. It has twists and turns and is put together to hold interest conceptually, melodically and harmonically.

4.0 out of 5 stars A CD of exciting jazz sounds, 28 Aug 2008
This review is from: Empirical (Audio CD)
Empirical

London based quintet Empirical release their self-titled debut CD produced by UK jazz legend Courtney Pine.

Although this is their first album this group have been playing together for a while and it shows. This is a compact & mature jazz sound of nine songs from five talented individual musicians.

Tracks like "Blessings", "Tulumba", "A Tyrants Tale", "The Deep" and "Fat Cat" have the hallmarks of the standard contemporary jazz sound yet make it a CD that sits comfortably in the 21st century.

Influenced by jazz heavyweights such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins & Ornette Coleman this CD is played & performed with fine amount of youthful zest and energy, which makes this a pleasant listening experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great discovery, 1 May 2009
This review is from: Empirical (Audio CD)
I bought this album after reading a review in the press, and I'm really glad I did. This is the first release from a young jazz combo who have already won plaudits from the great and the good. For once, the critics are right. Each of the band members are excellent in their own right, and the tunes themselves are superb. I'm looking forward to seeing them live whilst I can still afford a ticket!
