5.0 out of 5 stars What One Person Can Do
The title of this movie threw me. When I first heard about this movie, I figured it would be about John Newton who wrote the famous hymn. Instead, it tells the story of William Wilberforce, the man who led the fight to end slavery in England. The hymn of the title is William's favorite hymn and shows up a few times in the soundtrack. Still, I don't completely get why...

3.0 out of 5 stars Wilberforce was great....
I had been looking forward to seeing this ever since the film came out but I regret to say I was disappointed. Ioan Gruffudd was better than I expected as Wilberforce. My beef is with Michael Apted the director for giving such a blatantly unhistorical drama. I do not have time to list the errors but the two most blatant ones are to do with John Newton. The present tune we...

With such a great story already written out in history and a fantastic and inspirational ending, again already a given, why didnt this movie rate higher?

We all know the essence of the story, we all know that the song has become the anthem for the down trodden a comfort and strength in times of injustice. So why didnt this film manage to convey any of this? I dont know, all i know is that i was expecting something factual, emotional and overall inspirational and got non of those things. I wanted the life story that culminated in the epiphany that results in the song we know today.

You'd be better off buying a copy of this great song and giving the rest of the money to Amnesty International, then you can think of all the injustices they rescue men, women and children from every year whilst listening to the song. Which is after all, the whole meaning of this song today - thats what i was looking for anyway. Some soul, some humanity.

2.0 out of 5 stars They missed the chance, 8 Oct 2007
This review is from: Amazing Grace [DVD] (DVD)
What a shame the film had the potential for being so good - I saw them filming it at Gloucester Docks and the Tall Ships in real life were stunning and the set lovely - what a pity that this is the best they could do with the film - everyone was so clean - the only slave given any footage was dressed as a posh footman - Nothing was shown of the horrors of life for slaves or the great British Public at that time who were living in poverty themselves and would not have been clean and tidy. Nothing was shown of the real streets of London and the fact that a small minority of the population were less than interested in the cruel facts of live for most people. I know the film was essentially about Wilberforce but a lot more historical perspective could have been shown

2.0 out of 5 stars important story, dissappointing screenplay, 4 Sep 2007
This review is from: Amazing Grace [DVD] (DVD)
A very important story of an heroic man has been ruined by a poor screenplay and production. Anti-British revisionist sentiment and an undisguised targetting of an uninformed section of the contemporary American audience belittle the importance of this story of a man who battled slavery 60 years before Lincoln and who kick-started its end worldwide. On the plus side great cast and great acting - how on earth was this cast lured to work on such a poor screenplay?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as amazing as I hoped, 20 Sep 2007
This review is from: Amazing Grace [DVD] (DVD)
This film is well acted, shot nicely but is very boring.
Ultimately it is the plot, it never seems to start, and although it has good scenes it could have been better, as the potential was there.
It follows William Wiberforce and his struggle to abolish the slave trade. A story worth telling, but unfortunately as a film it wasn't really gripping enough. Still a lot better then some films coming out though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Who really ended slavery?, 3 Feb 2008

The film allows us to understand some things about Wilberforce, but the main thrust of the story - that Wilberforce was responsible for the ending of slavery - is quite false. The massive slave revolts led by Toussaint l'Ouverture and much later by Sam Sharpe, the mass abolitionist movement in Britain, with hundreds of thousands of people involved, were more central as historical causes...

3.0 out of 5 stars not up to par, 27 Sep 2007

I was expecting a whopper of a film considering the subject matter but unfortunately it falls a little flat. Still, it is a decent movie and worth watching just to get an idea of the struggle that went into trying to abolish slavery all those years ago. It focuses on the politics and physical and emotional toll it took on William Wilberforce in his battle. Less time is spent going into detail about what the slaves were going through which may have given the movie more of a *umph*, as it were.
