I've been using Le Creuset casseroles and frying pans for nearly forty years. The originals are still in regular use. I've tried all sorts of others, but nothing beats the even, steady heat of these for slow cooking on the hob or in the oven. (I use other pans for spuds and quick stuff). They're easier than you might expect to clean - just soak for about half an hour and just about anything comes off. Jif or similar or Fairy Power Spray will shift the stubborn, but rarely needed. Economical as you only need a low heat. OK for induction hob.As long as you don't put a hot pan in cold water or vice versa (cracks off the enamel with thermal shock)or drop it, it will last a lifetime. This one is just the right size for a generous 2-person casserole, leaving stirring space. Volcanic is THE colour - I think pale colours make the food seem cold if you take it to table. Beware of buying a huge one to match- when full they're for weightlifters only!

It's beautiful to look at, reassuringly strong and heavy, and great at cooking- shame my lovely French kitchen buddy is a casserole pot and not a bloke! The lid fits snugly and being cast iron, is so heavy that it doesn't lift more than a couple of millimetres when liquid is boiling inside the pot; steam escapes but no boiled-over spillage to clean up. I've been using my pot for around three weeks to cook everything from oily fish, onion soup to vegetables and no smells linger after washing up; I love the enamel interior! The pot is easy to clean- so don't ever use abrasive agents on it, inside or outside (they're unnecessary anyway). Stubborn stains can be removed easily by soaking your casserole pot in warm water and bicarbonate of soda (leaving it overnight is very effective). Never let the pot boil dry or heat it without liquid covering the entire base inside- the manufacturer's guide states that doing so will permanently damage the enamel coating. WARNING the handles get extremely hot during cooking so ensure that you have oven mitts to hand when removing the casserole dish from the oven or hob!

Shiny Black Cast Iron Casserole, with the new STAINLESS STEEL knob, from LE CREUSET.

ROUND-Shaped
18 cm
Approximate maximum capacity : 1.8L

After a great deal of pondering, I bought this item as a milestone birthday present for a very reluctant male colleague who finds Le Creuset 'too common and on the feminine side'. He also detests the 'non-colour' (his words) of 'Grey'!

So...as he rarely cooks for more than 2, this limited edition seemed the ideal choice, especially as it was also on special offer, from Amazon!

It arrived safely stowed in the trademark bright orange box, which initially worried him! However, this mild anxiety was soon replaced with more than obvious relief as a 'masculine looking pot' was revealed inside!

The only problem was that the accompanying instruction booklet was in Japanese - and as a new cast iron cook, it was fairly crucial he knew what to do with his shiny new dish!
But a quick call to the helpful Le Creuset helpline got him an English version, by return, and now this dinky little pot is rarely off the hob or out of his mini dishwasher!

He is particularly impressed with the ease of use and lowest temperature setting requirement especially on his state-of-the-art ceramic hob, and finds cleaning far easier than he anticipated, with a little soak and a rub with a plastic brush occasionally required.

So it is 5 stars from him, and another successful purchase for me!

ooOoo

EDIT - 31/03/2010

My converted friend has now bought the 24 cm size, too, so we can all go to tea!

This pot is simply my favourite of all my Le Creuset. It is perfect for when you want to make enough food for today, but not for tomorrow!!! Small soups and sauces, porridge, pasta, and even pies. Most of all, by far the best way of cooking steamed rice, especially good for that tricky brown rice, which in this pot comes up perfect.

Method for perfect brown rice:

Measure 1 cup of rice
Wash well
Put in pot with 1 1/2 cup of water, maybe a little more
Add a little olive oil, or any oil you have
Add a little salt & a little bit of brown sugar
You could add some Saffron or any spice you fancy

Then cover and bring to boil, then simmer for about 20 minutes
Then without touching the lid, turn off the heat and leave for another 20 mins
Finally fork through.

For white rice you can boil for 5 minutes and then leave for 20 mins.

The most important part of this is to not removed the lid 'not even for a peak' for a good 20 mins.

I now use this pot most days and the colour is by far the nicest and although Orange is the warmest colour, I think Teal is the next warmest.

Simply brilliant - this versatile little Casserole Dish/Cocotte is ideal for all sorts of recipes, but my favourite in this particular size, is 'Seafood Chowder', turning out comfortable servings for three.

Cast iron retains heat longer than any other cooking material so it is ideal for braising at the lowest of temperatures and, therefore, is very economical, too. Cast iron is remarkably easy to wash up, by hand, too - although some soaking and a rub with a plastic brush may be required for those more stubborn baked-on remains!
Dishwasher safe.

Boxed, complete with full CAST IRON care and use instructions.

Currently available in these other colours:

CERISE
GRADED BLUE
GRANITE
ALMOND (aka DUNE)
TEAL (aka CARIBBEAN)
VOLCANIC

along with:

SATIN BLACK (MATT) &ONYX BLACK (SHINY), both with the shiny NEW.....STAINLESS STEEL KNOB.

Le Creuset cast iron cookware is so well known and respected that further praise is hardly needed. So why does not everyone have a set? Maybe the initial cost?(and who buys at list price anyway?) BUT, please note, these items last a lifetime ! This casserole costs less than two pence a week to own !We could improve British cuisine, nutrition and home economy no end if every school leaver was given one of these and a half-hour lesson on how to use it and things to cook. My new little one gets venison and bacon bits tonight!Superb piece of kitchen kit.

The Le Creuset cast iron series is total quality. It's a different experience to cooking in regular pans - they hold the heat so well and so evenly that even the smallest ring on a hob can heat the biggest pan.

They are VERY heavy, and obviously the handles get hot, but thats just part of the appeal.

They are expensive, but feel like they'll last forever. The enamel coating beats non-stick every time, both in functionality and durability. At the current discount price you've got to get one... The only trouble is then you'll want to replace your other pans, and some of the larger sizes are over £100 each!!! Youch! Still the rest of us can grab bargins like this one...
