5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic return for 16Volt, 18 Dec 2007

This review is from: Full Black Habit (Audio CD)
After quite a long time since Eric's last full release, supercoolnothing, we have received this offering, fullblackhabit.

A lot of the criticisms of supercoolnothing were based on Eric's departure from the harsher, rasping vocal style of previous releases and the insertion of a number of tracks that could be considered filler material.

This album sees a return to a vocal style closer to letdowncrush and skin for the speedier tracks which takes me to my next point. The album seems to be split almost in half by two different styles of music. The one half we see a return to styles seen on previous albums. Fast-paced, abrasive, chainsaw guitaring with Eric's rasping vocals and a bit of background electronic noise. The other half takes a slower and, in my opinion, melodic aproach and focuses far more on the electronic sounds, seemingly basing the whole track around it. This isn't an unpleasant split as it contradictorally complements the harshness of the rest of the tracks.

All in all I believe this to be an interesting and more to the point excellent return to music for Eric Powell and thus 16Volt

5.0 out of 5 stars Nine years in the making: and it's totally worth it!, 23 Sep 2008
This review is from: Full Black Habit (Audio CD)
They say any album worth listening to is greater than the sum of its parts. And with collaborators including Steve White (KMFDM, Pig) Paul Raven (Killing Joke, Prong, Ministry) and Jason Bazinet (Sounds of Mass Production, Chemlab), it would certainly be difficult to say any album to live up to its parts. Yet fullblackhabit, the 5th album from American coldwave band 16volt, most certainly does. It blends elements of Industrial, Electro, Metal and Prog-rock so wonderfully together, it makes a treat for all fans of alternative music.

There are no throwaway tracks or any break in the quality, all 13 tracks are mixed and polished to perfection, sticking true to the iconic sound the band has crafted over the last decade-and-a-half, while at the same time providing something fresh, new, and most importantly, up-to-date.

I could quite easily go into a track-by-track review, but there's very little point; by what I've written above, you should already know if this album is for you or not. Bear in mind though, if you don't buy it, you are missing out!
