5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in anti violence, comedy and action
Destry is one of the great movie characters, from the first moment you see his lanky form you can't help but feel a connection. When the wimp finally shows the town what a real man is it comes as no surprise but even so, the sense of glee one derives from those few, well place, bullets is worht the wait and then on repeat viewings, the anticipation. On top of all this...

3.0 out of 5 stars A curate's egg
5 stars for Jimmy Stewart - no surprise there - and 0 for the hugely annoying Dietrich. That's 2.5 so far. The well-written snappy dialogue pushes it up to 3.5 stars, only to be let down again by the confused overall concept. Is this a comedy? A melodrama? A morality play? Nobody knows, including the producer and the director.

What on earth does anyone see in...

The difference between love and lust, what it REALLY takes to be a man, and lots of whittling - this movie has it all. Not by any means a standard Western, particularly because of the two lead characters, the goodies are good in wildly different and unexpected ways, and the baddy, himself no stereotype, exhibits a mean streak scarily real.

It feels as if the role was written especially for James Stewart, but Marlene Dietrich never did anything else like this in her career, and she lights up the screen.

Only four stars because there is nothing else on the disk. But the movie is one of the greatest of all time.

I remembered this film from a showing on TV years ago, I wanted to see if it was as entertaining as I remembered...and it was. You can't beat the straight forward films that they made in the past !

What on earth does anyone see in Dietrich? Her singing is like the result of recording a fingernail scratching across a blackboard, and then lowering it by about 5 octaves so it sounds like nothing on earth and is simply a blur of slurred words - and just about as sexy as a Wienerschnitzel. Add to that the way her mouth twists and trembles bizarrely as she struggles to enunciate English words and at the same time look 'alluring' and 'exotically sensual' by numbers, and you have to have a heart of stone not to laugh.
