I believe this to be one of Marlon Brando's most underrated performances. The film itself is a splendid period piece of Apartheid South Africa. I rarely see this movie mentioned in biographical comment with regard to Brando's career, and yet, it is a stunning performance. I assume the lack of comment is the fact that he only played a supporting role, and that the subject of apartheid probably denied it a higher profile. As somebody who has lived in South Africa, both before and after apartheid, i cannot tell you how accurate the performance of Brando is in this role. There is no doubt in my mind that he must have studied meticulously before playing this part. I do not know why, but there are a large percentage of professional people in South Africa who have an almost perfect "Queen's English" accent...but it is tinged with a slight South African edge which only the most perceptive can detect. Not only does Marlon Brando capture this perception, but he somehow manages to replicate it, which i have always found truly incredible.

The film is notable for a number of things and the greatest is that it revealed the level of inhumanity that the perpetrators of Apartheid descended to and I'm sure that choosing such a stellar cast helped hammer in yet another nail into that outrageous administration. On the plus side is a wonderful cameo by Marlon Brando that shines through some quite flat dialogue. The main characters appear as strong identities but the film is uneven with errors of continuity - for example, at the end when young Johan is delivering the affidavits he does so with the rain teeming down & him on a bicycle in a poncho; minutes later we see him in a very smart suit being congratulated by all and sundry. At first I thought this was another day but other action continued as though it was the same.

I read the book during my military service and it took another 15 years to comprehend what Western style of DemoNcracy mechanism is. How was possible to make such movie for the general audience at that time ? In our War on Terrors we can see the same brand of security experts as were depicted in South Africa . Reading Fakerdbook comments by experts who express the same supremacy to oppressed . Great movie to see and the Book about reconciliation hearings by Desmond Tutu is the great cultural experiment in courage.

I chose this rating because this is a very good film about apartheid South Africa. anyone who is interested in South Africa's apartheid past should definitely check it out. The characters are interesting depictions of life pre 1994.
I would recommend this film if you are just interested in learning something new or if you are really into specific films... either way, it can be a little bit emotionally draining but that's just the nature of the subject matter. All in all well worth the buy!

A much underrated film. Originally watched this many years ago at the cinema when it first came out and it left a lasting impression on my wife and me in regard to the ruthlessness and operant nature of the apartheid rule in South Africa. The film was just as good watching it again all these years later.

Apartheld was and forever will be a truly obnoxious "disease" affecting not only those unfortunates who must suffer from it but also those who are semi-involved, This movie illustrates the way it splits families and friends. It is a splendid production wilh a cast who contribute much to it.s success. WORTH WATCHING AND DIGESTING

A very dark movie, but gripping. It gives a chilling picture of the brutal oppression of non-whites in South Africa during the height of the Apartheid period, but it also portrays some of the tensions within the Afrikaner community during that period. Marlon Brando's performance is brilliant!

The story of Soweto.
Donald Sutherland depicting a teacher, a resident for 15 years, not realising the injustices, realising his naivity, having his conscience challenged, and needing to change attitudes and values.
Thought provoking and challenging.
The injustices faced,

I saw this film in S Africa when it was banded
There were many Afrikaans people who suffered ,and this is a true reflection on what happened to many at the time , we We went to S Africa in 1976 in the middle of the Soweto riots and stayed 26 years

Great acting, Brando superb, Sutherland not far behind, and very well made, considering it is a subject that has been tried in varying forms many times before, it really holds it's own. Well worth watching, and even again.
