5.0 out of 5 stars His finest album in 25 years, 5 Oct 2007

Reading the review below you have to wonder how many Loudon Wainright III albums he's actually listened to. In his time LW III has written the two most resonant songs about the death of a parent - his father Loudon Wainwright Junior in 'Sometimes I Forget' (on the album History) and his mother in 'Homeless' (on the album Last Man On Earth). My advice? Wait until your mother dies. Listen to Homeless. And sob into you loudspeakers. I did.

Strange Weirdos is just wonderful, a huge range of songs, and for a welcome change, some arrangements that really let the songs shine their brightest.

Having amassed something like 20 Loudo albums, this is the one I've played the most repeatedly. Collaboration is obviously good for him.
'You Can't Fail Me' now doesn't have the emotional wrench of 'Homeless' but it's a fantastic song. Other stuff that might get you hooked - the upbeat 'X or Y', the slightly Cajun 'Passion Play' the slightly indulgent 'Grey in LA' and thefamiliar 'Strange Weirdos'.

Most Loudonesque moment on the album: "everyone looks ancient at your high school reunion."

I've been a fan of LW III for many years and expect something from the words and music. Usually the expectation is rewarded with a round of honesty and insight. That is present in this compilation and is in some ways a return to previous levels of musical and lyrical quality. Enjoyable in a somewhat sad way at times, like the master knows.

Bought this on the back of watching the movie that inspired the CD. Some happy songs, some sad, but really enjoyable to listen to, I really like this CD.

No Loudon album is ever perfect, but this has more stand-out tracks than most albums made nowadays. Both the cover of Peter Blegvad's Daughter and the title track ("If I let you know me, Then why would you want me?") are almost mind-bendingly perfect. If you want an album that deals with all the issues of what to do in a new relationship, this is it.

4.0 out of 5 stars one of his best albums, 27 April 2012

This review is from: Strange Weirdos: Music From And Inspired By The Film Knocked Up (Audio CD)
The sound track - according to the informative sleeve notes - of the film Knocked Up, with the words restored. The first track is a beauty, the others less so. The 3rd track is lovely but the insertion of passages of key changes jars and detracts from the otherwise excellent song. The other tracks run through the gamut of typical Loudon styles, including an excellently soulful "X or Y". The musicians that accompany Loudon complement his playing and voice, giving a sound fuller and more rounded than on some of his other albums. Loudon s lyrics are, as ever, wry, observant and amusing, if perhaps less hilarious and provocative than usual. A more mature album, then, than some of his other stuff.

For all his undoubted talents in singing, playing and composing , this album, like Loudon's other work,, lacks that spark of genius and originality that would lift his music from the enjoyable to the beautiful, so its a four star not a five. However, despite never having had that glittering career, Loudon, in contrast to his more famous contemporaries such as Dylan, still has a voice (never better on this showing), still writes original songs, and is still worth listening to, the tortoise to other's hare. And having heard him live in Cardiff last year, he has definately still got it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific album, 8 July 2013

This is an album I'm not familiar with but since receiving it the other day I have been playing it a lot. I thought 'More Love Songs' was brilliant, and it is, but this is just as captivating and you can't help but press play again when it ends. I'm really pleased that this is now part of my music collection.

Having watched and enjoyed Knocked Up for a 2nd time I decided to investigate the music. I'm not keen on all of the songs...it's very bluesy, but happy with the purchase.
