'Loose Women' is one of my guilty TV viewing pleasure, it's just a load of women 'gassing' I know, but the panellists can be very funny. Proud Yorkshire lass Jane McDonald is my favourite, and hearing her speak about her music career one day, intrigued and encouraged me to pick up this collection of her past work. I guess 'Because You Loved Me' will also be a guilty pleasure of mine, because I have to say that her singing is very good.
Here we have 18 covers of well-known pop and soul hits, and although Jane doesn't attempt to change their style, and rarely comes even close to making them her own, there is some good stuff to be heard.
I particularly like her a great interpretation of Lulu's US chart-topper 'To Sir With Love', and treatment of the motown standard 'What Becomes of the Broken Hearted', both of which have solid arrangements. I even prefer Jane's version of 'My Heart Will Go On' to the more acclaimed Celine Dion original, and speaking as a huge Aerosmith fan, think her cover of 'I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing' is great.
'Because You Loved Me' is a fine compilation of covers, and a great easy-listening album.
