Virtually no crafting, poor quality and overpriced. One to avoid
on 6 December 2014
What a horrible, unimaginative excuse for a crafting kit this is.
What you get for your money is sufficient lip balm base to make 5 pots of lip balm (these are about half the size you'll expect as the pots have a raised base and are much shallower than they appear), three dropper bottles of scent/flavour, a scoop/stirrer and a mixing pot plus a few stickers for decoration and a little storage holder for the pots.
The activity itself lasts a few seconds. Take one scoop of base mixture, place it in the mixing jug, add a couple of drops of flavour, stir and put into a pot. Decorate the pot. Or at least try to. There's a good chance that the stickers won't stick.
IF, that is, you don't get put off after the first one by the fact that the lip balm base even before you add any colour/flavour is ridiculously gloopy, uber-sticky and unappealing. Once mixed, it gets worse. The colour/scent bottles each proved to hold just a scant couple of drops of extremely viscous liquid.
And this gave me pause. I bought this during November's lightning deals to use with my friend's children: the kids recognised the kit. They'd had the same set before, but hadn't had problems with it. The 9 and 11 year olds I set out to use this with (plus their 10 year old friend) readily identified everything about the kit, but were horrified by how runny the base proved and how thick and short in supply the flavours were. I suspect this could actually do with a best before date.
The set I bought was not fit for purpose. The kids I used it with (within days of purchase) had previously had the same set and reported much more positive results.
Given how little there actually is to the crafting element, the best I could have given this set would have been three stars. Considering how useless it was and how disappointed the kids were, this is a clear 'I hate it' for me. It certainly isn't worth the two pounds per pot I paid on sale, never mind the full RRP!
I bought two 'Creativity for Kids' sets during recent Lightning Deals promotions. In light of the quality of both sets, this is now a brand I'd actively avoid.
