TOP 500 REVIEWERon 12 March 2013
The extraordinary multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk(1936-1977) was in fine form for his third album recorded in New Jersey on July 11, 1961 with Kirk(tenor sax, manzello, stritch, flute, siren); Jack McDuff(organ); Joe Benjamin(bass) & Art Taylor(drums).
The seven memorable tracks include four Kirk originals and three standards. Highlights include a transformation of 'Skater's Waltz', Roland's flute feature 'Funk Underneath' and his strong tenor playing on 'Makin' Whoopee'.
Despite the short playing-time of 34 minutes Kirk's exhilarating album deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.
