5.0 out of 5 stars This is how you make a dvd
The most exciting thing about this show is that you feel as if the dvd-recording is far less important to Galifiankis than how the show is going to the in-house audience. How many times can you say that about a stand-up dvd? It feels like we're being allowed to spy on a live event, rather than being spoonfed the best bits of a larger gig.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Weak
I bought this dvd on the strength of Zach's hysterically funny monologues on America's Saturday Night Live, where he improvises a short stand-up routine, and reduces me to side-splitting laughter every time. However, it seems that he is at his best in that situation, and when left to his own devices (like on this dvd), he just produces really lame, obscure and...

This review is from: Zach Galifianakis - Live At The Purple Onion [DVD] (DVD)
The most exciting thing about this show is that you feel as if the dvd-recording is far less important to Galifiankis than how the show is going to the in-house audience. How many times can you say that about a stand-up dvd? It feels like we're being allowed to spy on a live event, rather than being spoonfed the best bits of a larger gig.

Don't be put off if like me you thought the Hangover was abysmal. This is compelling and hilarious live stand-up, with a similar blunt, deliberately under-cooked tone to Louis CK's sitcom "Louis".

The gig itself is interspersed with the bearded Galifiankis playing his own (clean-shaven) brother, reflecting on the difficulties of touring with his stand-up sibling. Despite being a very cunning (and clearly successful) acting showreel it never feels like one, but enriches your experience of the many faces and skills of this consummate comedian.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Zach Galifianakis - Live At The Purple Onion [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this dvd on the strength of Zach's hysterically funny monologues on America's Saturday Night Live, where he improvises a short stand-up routine, and reduces me to side-splitting laughter every time. However, it seems that he is at his best in that situation, and when left to his own devices (like on this dvd), he just produces really lame, obscure and inaccessible comedy.

He is evidently drunk off his head for the whole show, and rather than being funny, it's just annoying and incoherent, and the funniest thing on the whole dvd is the short out-takes reel from the 'interview with Zach's brother' sections.

I watched it once, and probably won't watch it again. Do yourself a favour and get Dara O'Briain's latest live dvd instead. Much better.
