They are definitely packed with action in that Los Angeles precinct of the PDLA. But it is not law enforcement they want and look for. It is nothing but cleaning up the crime they do not like too much, though that makes them earn a living. Their methods are dictated by the necessary efficiency special units bring to the department.

Special units are nothing but cops that use the gangsters' methods to eliminate the gangsters themselves. They do not aim at arresting them. They only arrest the small fry to catch the big ones and catch them dead rather than alive. There is no choice in that. The top gangsters might survive if they are very, very, very lucky.

The second thing is that these gangster-cops are in fact under pressure from all and in all directions. Pressure to be made redundant and no longer wanted by the chief of police, the sheriff in chief or the captain of who knows what, or even the District Attorney, the one they could nickname Old Sparks or Guillotine, but his preys are the cops who are making too many waves and do not arrest enough people who will not protest or have lawyers.

They are also under pressure from the gangsters they are trying to hunt and chase. These will use all the flesh and bones they can find to create that pressure: brothers, sisters, wives, kids, you name them you have them. And who cares. This society is nothing but a permanent civil war and the end of the USSR has brought quite a few thousand extremely well trained ex-KGB officers turned gangsters and these do not hesitate at pressing the trigger or just getting rid of you if you are in their way. That's their way of dealing with obstacles: blow them up with dynamite first and then ask for their identity.

They are also under pressure from their ex-wives, future wives, their future wives' mothers, their kids, autistic or not, the head shrinks of their children, their wives' boyfriends and their girlfriends' husbands, from the prostitutes on the sidewalk or the pimps in the bars, not to speak of their parents and their best friends, their neighbors and their children's teachers. Too bad boys, to be a cop is to be the focus of attention, and if you are girls, it is then even worse since you will have to accept the services the trendy nice boys in the street will offer you on a platter.

This series is thus not particularly clear on the subtleties of the crimes or the crime scenes. In fact there is no crime scene, no scientific police, no lawyers, no forensics, no standard procedure, no miranda whatever it may be. There is only violence, blood, bullets and victims. And a little bit of provocative racism in a series that is trying to show that the blacks are ten times better than the white Armenians, Russians, Ukrainians or other Slavonic or not ex-Soviet citizens or is it gulag-inmates, or even maybe gulag-wardens.

In one word your brain is not going to be strained by the great police work and author's imagination in this series. Not even the slightest dots or spots of dusty morals. Just from time to time some pangs of conscience just before vomiting and then getting back to the bottle neck of the bottle or is it the neck of some victim or corrugated friend?

Out of the frying pan into the fire is a good way to explain this gritty cop drama and season three of The Shield is the best season yet.

As the walls start to close in on Vic and his team the future of the Strike Force looks uncertain, and a ripple affect ensures ts not only them who are feeling the repercussion of their actions.

The pressure mounts for all the key members of Farmington's force, with everyone catching heat from Vic and his crew's maneuvers, and getting drawn into some unscrupulous undertakings themselves.

With the Armenian mafia hot on their heels, pressures at home adding to problems and tension within the team slowly mounting, it's only a matter of time before something gives with explosive consequences for all involved.

There's some truly great lines in the scripts and a style to the camerawork that really puts you on the ground with the troops. It all adds to the fast-paced, guerilla feel of the show which suits the stories to a tee.

Some of the story lines are truly shocking, and as they unfolds it's a race to see who will get caught with their hand in the cookie jar and who will come out alive.

By the end of the season things are at boiling point: lines are drawn, friendships are shattered and people's plans have fallen to pieces - roll on season 4!!!

This series started me off on a shield experience which i am still living, the material is first class the acting marvellous and the quality of the dvd brilliant its all just too much. The script demands the most detailed attention, the lines and delivery of Vic is just great and watch out for the skullduerry its all too easy to lose the plot

As always, the Shield is an excellent program that I would highly recommend to all. Gritty, exciting and occasionally disturbing. Season 3 doesn't quite maintain the high standard of the first 2 seasons, but provides several plot points that form the basis of the later years.

Shame it's taken so long to be released!!

Yet another brilliant series of The Shield. I have now watched all 7 series and sadly have a gap in my TV viewing life. It is just a pity that there aren't more writers and actors out there who can create such brilliant plot lines, the series kept me thinking all the time so not just mindless viewing.

5 Stars all the way - I can't recommend this series enough yet not many people in the UK saw it when it was on TV. Please but the series and watch it you won't be disappointed.

Without doubt one of the finest cop shows to come out of the U.S.A.
I have seen every episode of the Shield and watched this series through twice and will watch again.
The premise of the Shield is very different, the main characters are bad, violent corrupt cops whose lives gradually fall apart
as the Police and F.B.I catch up with them.
There is a linear story line from the first episode to the last with diversions along the way.
The acting is brilliant, this show is very gritty and extremely brutal in places. However the violence is never gratuitous.
The whole series has a beginning, a middle and a very brilliant end, the final episode is one of the best final episodes i have ever seen to a series.
I won't include spoilers, this show is far too good for that, just buy every episode and enjoy.
You will not be disappointed but be aware, bad language and gruesome violence are quite graphic.
The Shield is in my all time top ten of all shows ever. Sensational.

This third season of what's probably the best cop drama out there today is absolutely gripping! The story line gets you hooked right from the start as the Vic Mackie's Strike Team begin digging an even deeper hole as they try to climb out! With many twists and turns along the way which gradually build up to a climax in the final episode, this is a must watch for those into an edgy, pacey drama with excellent direction.

Just finished Season 3 (I'll be immediately starting 4) and compelled to post a review to state what a tremendous programme this is. What strikes me the most is the absolutley relentless pace and plotting... not a second of screen time ever seems to be wasted.I find it hard to say which is the best series yet but this one certainly gets to a new level in terms of the characters and their individual motivations and anxieties and how these impact on the team. The Shane / Tavon showdown has got to be the most jaw-dropping sequence I've seen in a TV drama series for a long time. The Armenian money runs as a consistent thread through Season 4 but some of the side-plots , such as the pursuit of the "cuddler" rapist , are also terrific. A fantastic programme... very different to The Wire, being not as "deep" and detailed, but for a major-league TV thrill ride you cant beat The Shield.

If you've followed the series so far you'll know the various story strands that are involved so far. These strands become frayed even further with every character now seeming to have some secret or other to hide or ulterior motive to conceal. The main story arc follows the fallout from the Armenian money train robbery. This series gets better and better.

This is a great series as a whole and I'm pleased that I ordered it from Amazon. I must confess to have only seen a few episodes here and there on TV but read some great reviews and decided to take a chance and order the entire series. There are great in depth reviews already on here and there is no point in repeating what has already been written. This is a great hard hitting series with many twists and turns and a fabulous cast. It actually gives you a pretty broad perspective of not just the main protagonists, Michael Chiklis and his crew but also of the other detectives, police officers, etc, who all have a part to play in the episodes. Highly enjoyable and well worth watching.
