This review is from: Bach - Missae Breves (Audio CD)
This excellent 2-CD set contains fine performances of all four of Bach's shorter Mass settings (sometimes erroneously called the Lutheran masses) which consist of just the Kyrie and Gloria. The music is less well-known than many of Bach's choral works, but is nonetheless extremely fine. A good deal of it is recycled from movements from Bach's own Sacred Cantatas (as one might expect from Bach) and is forged into excellent, enjoyable and sometimes very touching pieces. The oboe and soprano duet in the Qui tollis from the F major Mass is simply lovely, for example, and immaculately played and sung.

Cantus Cölln give outstanding performances of all four Masses, and this performance of the F major Mass was recently selected as "the obvious choice" on Radio 3's Building A Library. I agree. Konrad Junghänel uses small vocal forces of two singers to a part which works extremely well in these smaller, more intimate works, and the quality of singing and musicianship is excellent.

I was slightly dubious about buying this set because I didn't know the Masses well and wasn't familiar with Cantus Cölln, but needn't have worried: both music and performance are excellent. Very warmly recommended.
