4.0 out of 5 stars Britain's most overlooked band return, 22 Jun 2007
This review is from: Tinsel Stars (Audio CD)
This lp sees Davey Woodward and his cohorts drop a lot of the eclectic mix of styles that have characterised their previous releases and return to a more traditional pop song structure.

The opening four tracks are magnificent. The title track opens proceedings with a delicate ballad with a definite country lilt. This proves to be the only ballad on the lp aside from the 55 second closing track! Track two sees the EPB in more familiar strummy guitar territory with 'Can You Explain This?.' A beautiful song with an addictive elongated vocal on the chorus. Next the single 'Hello' delivers it's wry message of rain soaked festivals and leering men in Cavaliers accompanied by a bouncy string arrangement. 'Jodie' follows this and tops the lot. Superb lyrics and fantastic melody leave you wondering why Davey Woodward isn't being lauded to the hills in his own country. Simply brilliant.

After this the lp loses a little bit of consistency, though there are still enough nuggets to keep the listener interested. The plaintive 'Make Me Happy' and wild, psychedlic rave up 'Made For Me' being two stand outs. 'Subtiltled's 60's sounding strum would not appear out of place on a classic Brigitte Bardot film soundtrack. The only track that doesn't quite do it for me is the heavy rock of 'A Home For My Baby', but don't let that put you off!

Buy the cd and the preceeding (and slightly better) 'Tarmac & Flames', I promise you you will not regret it.
