This two-CD set (the case comes in a nice sleeve) had got to be the best value around. Most people would be happy with the music here if they had paid £10 or £12, so imagine your delight at having got it for £2.98. There is almost three full hours of the one and only Ella Fitzgerald singing timeless American songs in her own inimitable style. It is truly wonderful music. Buy one and get another (or two) for Christmas gifts!

Recording dates from 1947 to 1955. Running times 75 minutes and 77 minutes. This 49-song compilation includes a wide range of performances and both studio and live. The first 4 songs on Disc 2 are from a 1953 concert recorded in Japan with her quartet. Ellis Larkin's is on piano for the Gershwin songs. Includes 4 songs from the famous Cole Porter Song book, Original recordings produced by Norman Granz, Recorded March 27, 1956 at Capitol Studios, Hollywood with the Buddy Bregman orchestra featuring Paul Smith on piano and the finest of session musicians. There are also 3 Rodgers and Hart and 10 Gershwin songs. Attractively packaged with an outer cardboard sleeve, recording dates (years), liner notes and excellent cover artwork, which lifts them all to life. The budget price tag makes it a bargain.

TOP 100 REVIEWERon 4 October 2011
My feelings about Ella Fitzgerald are shown by reviews. The song books are legendary. Thanks to Norman Grantz. The music is well-known and needs no elaboration as it is sublime and beautiful. Since I heard my mother's LPs in the 50's I have been bitten. Age has not rescinded my opinion nor the completeness of Ella's unmatchable ability in her own format. This is another (ridiculous) bargain. Play it to your parents, grandparents, children, friends and neighbours. They will cotton-on to this wonderful, unique, singer. Modest and shy she was, but the output is pure and delivered in a matchless fashion. She remains a beautiful flower in musical history.

How can anyone on this earth not like the great Ella singing these wonderful
songs, her voice is supreme, the arrangements, the musicians just great.
These songs will never die, I already have most of these recordings on other
c.d's, but who cares. This was another bargain from Zoverstocks, second hand
but like new.

Writing this at a time of the year when many people are feeling a bit low after all the snow and ice and flu etc and Spring still seems a long way off. Help is at hand in the form of this excellent double CD -Ella is guaranteed to make you feel better. Even the price is a tonic. Many of the old favourites are here together with some less familiar songs which are worth getting to know. As a bonus there are a couple where Ella is joined by Louis Armstrong. Fantastic value!

This collection demonstrates the virtuosity of the best female singer of popular song.Apart from her voice, it also demonstrates the skill of the American songwriters, who gave so much to the world and whose work will endure for a very long time.

I love Ella Fitzgerald but I was not impressed with this effort by "Not Now" Music. The quality control manager of this particular project should seriously look at their approach & just what constitutes & will influence customers & what should/would promote product loyalty.

I have a substantial number of "Now Not/One Day" & generally think they are reasonably priced & good quality. They often fall down on the track information side of things & usually provide just generic details. Though is this case there is a neat 16 page booklet.

I purchased this 5 CD set thinking I would be getting the first 5 chapters of Ella & Verve's massive project "The Great American Songbook", Porter, Rodgers & Hart, Berlin, Ellington & Gershwin. Not the case, what you get is the cut down edition, the first 2/3rds or whatever fits onto one CD satisfactorily & then they just leave the rest off.

Even this would seem to have purpose, if the tracks would appear to have been selected, but that does not seem to be the case either. Take the Gershwin album as an example the first 13 or 14 minutes is instrumental Gershwin music, with no Ella Fitzgerald at all, a strange situation, when a number of Ella tracks were taken off.

The music is great, the product in itself is fine, the editing & information needs a lot of serious refining. "Not Now" you can do a lot better.

If you are a lover of great Jazz vocal &/or Ella you need to have this collection, but wait for the ultimate set, not this, leave this one on the shelf.
