Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mythbusters: Collection 1 [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
*This says it's a Region 1(US) DVD, but it played fine on my DVD player, which is just a normal DVD player. However you can de-region most DVD players anyway, by searching for the de-regioning code for that model on the net.
I was a bit confused trying to decide which issue of Mythbusters DVDS to buy. There are at least three - this Region 1(US) version organised into 'Collections', the Region 2(Europe) version organised into 'Volumes', and also the comprehensive version organised into seasons.
I got this version, as I'd read it wasn't as heavily edited as the R2.
Numbers in brackets are the real episode numbers according to broadcast order. So after buying it, this is what I know. There are 12 episodes, each about 45 minutes long.
Disc 1: Exploding Toilet (1), Cell Phone Destroys Gas Station (2), Barrel of Bricks (3) and Penny Drop (4).
Disc 2: Buried Alive (5), Lightning Strikes Tongue Piercing (6) and Killer Brace Position (33!)
Disc 3: Cooling a 6-Pack (29), Is Yawning Contagious (28) and Hollywood on Trial (7th Special)
Disc 4: Son of a Gun (30), and Shop till You Drop (5th Special) and Mythbusters Revealed (6th Special).
As you can see, a huge chunk of aired episodes were missed out. However, a lot of them are included in later collections. Not sure why they didn't just put them on in order, but anyhoo.
The narration is really funny, and American, which I think differs from the shows that aired on UK Discovery Channel. The first six episodes are Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, and then on the seventh episode the rest of the team are involved.
You've probably seen Mythbusters, but in case you haven't, the presenters Jamie and Adam are experienced stunt and special effects type people, and they investigate various urban myths to see if they could be true. The new presenters seem to know their stuff too. Normally the myths end up being `busted', and we get to watch them make awesome and dangerous contraptions from scrap metal and various mechanical items, and then blow it up.
This is really fun, funny television, and you do actually learn stuff in between all the explosions. They seem like a bunch of nice people too, and they all get along and like each other. The exact opposite of what a lot of TV people seem to think makes good reality televion. Yay for Mythbusters! 'IS EVERYBODY READY FOR DIVING??!!'
So, it is now several months later, and I now have watched all 5 of these Mythbusters Collections. Using the Mythbusters list of episodes available on the net, I've worked out exactly which episodes you get on these Collections, and which you don't.
So, on Collections 1-5 you get:
Pilots 1-3, Specials 5-7, Special 10
Episodes: 1-6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 22, 28-31, 33, 35, 47, 50, 56, 57, 60, 61, 67, 68, 70-72, 78-80, 84, 86, 96, 97, 100, 101, 103-113, 115, 116.
I'm not sure what will be on Collection 6, but it's unlikely to contain any episodes under 100, since Collection 5 didn't.
This means that you DON'T get:
2003 Season : Episode 7
2004: 9, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, Special 1, Best Ofs 1-3 (11 episodes in total, not including Best Ofs)
2005: 25-27, 32, 34, 36-43, Specials 2-4, Special 8 (17 episodes in total)
2006: 44-46, 48, 49, 51-55, 58, 59, 62-66, 69, Special 9 (19)
2007: 73-77, 81-83, 85, 87-94 (17)
2008: 95, 98, 99, 102, Specials 11 and 12 (6)
As you can see, these DVD Collections really miss out a lot of episodes. You can get Region 4 Mythbusters SEASONS on a website that rhymes with sneebay, for about twentytoo squid inc.P&P. I haven't checked, but I imagine that they have ALL the aired episodes on them.
So, it's up to you if you want to buy these Collections, or just go freekin mental and buy whole seasons.
