This review is from: Bartók: 44 Duos for two violins (Audio CD)
I have had a lot of pleasure from this disc. You might have thought that forty four duos, mostly lasting between one and two minutes each, would make for a rather dry experience. Not a bit of it - Bartok mixes up the styles, the folk roots, the pace and the colour of the material here to wonderful effect, and time and again I found myself responding to the wit and the invention of the artistry underlying this charming endeavour.

Balogh and Kiss have long played together as the violins of the New Budapest Quartet. Both men are into their sixties now and the playing carries all the hallmarks of mutual respect and joint comfort in being wholly embedded in the language. Just once or twice I found myself wanting to hear this sometimes bucolic music played with a slightly rougher rustic edge, but really it is most satisfying. I hope you enjoy it as I have.
