5.0 out of 5 stars Nightflight To Venus- Boney M, 8 Aug. 2008
By
This review is from: Nightflight To Venus (Audio CD)
Perhaps Boney Ms finest hour. Nobody could touch Boney M in 1978, not even the mighty ABBA. This album starts off with it's wonderful title track which runs seamlessly into the No2 hit 'Rasputin'. Other hits included are 'Rivers Of Babylon' and 'Brown Girl in The Ring' two sides of the same single which topped the charts, sold 2 million copies and stayed in the chart for 40 weeks. Every track is a winner.
In some ways, the more interesting tracks are the non single tracks like 'Voodoonight' and 'He Was A Steppenwolf' as these tracks are less familiar as they haven't been played to death on the radio or at family dicsos.
There are a few covers here including Ron Millers 'King of The Road' performed by Marcia Barrett, 'Painter Man' a real stomper performed by Liz Mitchell (a top 10 hit in 1979), 'Rivers Of Babylon' originally recorded by The Melodians and most suprisingly Niel Youngs 'Heart of Gold' which blends the voices of Liz Mitchell,Marcia Barrett and Frank Farian beautifully.
'Mary's Boy Child' Boney Ms other 'almost' 2 million seller is included as a bonus track here as well as it's b-side 'Dancin In The Streets'.
This track should not be confused with the Martha Reeves classic. It is in fact a Frank Farian written and performed original. No other members of Boney M sang on this track which even Farian himself described as a bit of nonsense.
Frank Farian and Boney M created a little pop masterpiece with this album but they were never albe to reach the standards achieved here again.

This album was released in 1978 and epitomises the "disco pop" of that era. Night Flight to Venus contains the key hits behind those memories; Rasputin; Painter Man; Brown Girl in the Ring and Rivers of Babylon etc. together with a cover version of King of the Road and Heart of Gold. The other tracks are less memorable to me but are consistent in style and quality with the rest of the disc. Boney M's performance is just as energetic as I remember it and the recording quality is very reasonable even by contemporary standards. A great listen that will bring the memories flooding back and good value too. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eurodisco fun, 6 Oct. 2002

This varied album was released following their huge success with their biggest hit ever (Rivers of Babylon/Brown Girl in the Ring) and also contains the follow-up Rasputin, which was another chart hit and dancefloor filler. It is an album of prime Eurodisco but unfortunately the rest of the tracks do not quite live up to the promise of their other albums like Love For Sale. The title track starts with a vocoder-voice counting down to a launch into a sizzling piece of synth-pop and girlie vocals. Painter Man is a nice sing-along while King Of The Road and Heart Of Gold of passable interpretations of these classic songs. Voodoonight, Steppenwolf and Never Change Lovers are just fillers. I recommend their Greatest Hits album because it contains all their best work, including the best tracks from this album.

I LOVE this album, the drums on the track Night Flight to Venus, blending with rasputin - fantastic and in my opinion, never yet bettered. The wonderfull dreadful lyrics, 'he was a cat that really was gone,' and 'he was such a lovely dear' - all descriptions of Rasputin, you gotta laugh but everything is so beautifully produced by Frank Farian - a genuis in the recording industry. Just a brilliant album for its time and an absolute bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars The classic album, 30 Mar. 2005

This album was popular all over Europe and remains one of the finest disco albums ever recorded. It included four tracks that, released as singles, became huge UK hits for them - and the other tracks were also of a high quality. The title track (included here) was not released as a UK single but must surely have been considered for such a release.
The first single off the album was Rivers of Babylon, a cover of a reggae song from the sixties that was originally recorded by the Melodians. It spent five weeks at number one in the UK before beginning a slow decline. Just when it looked as if it was near to dropping out of the charts (over three months after its original release), the record was flipped and its B-side, Brown girl in the ring, was heavily promoted. The record climbed the charts again and eventually re-entered the top five. By the time the record finally dropped out of the UK chart, it had been there for forty weeks.
While the above double-sided single was still in the charts, Boney M released Rasputin, which made number two in the UK. Following a Christmas single not taken from the album, they returned to this album for one more single, Painter man, which only just made the top ten. Being released more than a year after the album from which it came, I suspect that a lot of people already had the album by then.
The other tracks include unlikely but brilliant covers of King of the road (Roger Miller) and Heart of gold (Neil Young) as well as three original songs of which my favorite is Never change lovers in the middle of the night.
The hits are, of course, available elsewhere, but this fine album is worth hearing in its entirety - if you can find it.

There are oodles of Boney M compilations out there but this is the original classic album that helped to launch them on a meteoric rise to fame.

The biggest hits are here, recorded at the famous Hansa studio.

I bought this on vinyl in the Seventies and still treasure it - catchy rhythms, unique harmonies and stacks of disco beats. This is nothing to dislike here if this is your 'bag'.

5.0 out of 5 stars 70s 'disco heaven'!, 12 May 2010
By
FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Nightflight to Venus (Audio CD)
'Boney M' had been around a couple of years having the odd hit single prior to 1978, but in that year they experienced (as most performers were doing) a 'surge' in popularity due to the all-time high volume of sales for the 7" single never before seen in pop history. This in turn, made them one of the biggest selling acts of the late 70s. Their singles were issued in such large quantities, one plant actually closed down due to having run out of vinyl - whilst one of their singles: 'Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring' on its second chart run were being distributed between two pieces of tissue paper - the company now having run out of paper sleeves too!

This album was one of two chart-toppers in succession for the band; the second being 'Oceans Of Fantasy' which had really only ever sold on the strength of their previous material and success, and did not produce the same volume of hit singles or quality songs.

This is 'disco heaven' from start to finish, and anyone who loved the 70s will enjoy this immensely as they relive their 'halcyon days'. They appealed to all ages and all cultures, and were a truly unique band that are still fondly remembered today - more than three decades on!

Have always enjoyed this album since the 70s. Used this opportunity to update the format onto CD as LP not sounding the best now.
Contains many enjoyable hits and contains the bonus track 'Mary's Boy Child' - so we have something extra to play in December.

This review is from: Nightflight to Venus (Audio CD)
Boney M - big hair, big tunes, big fun! The funkiest band from Germany ever, the 'M' lead the way in no-nonsense daft disco. Rasputin, with its five nminute intro, is the stand-out track and the rest is too silly for words. Buy it now!
