This review is from: Pérotin and the Ars Antiqua (Audio CD)
This recording was made before an audience in 1996 at Trinity College Cambridge as part of the Hilliard Ensemble summer school held there. It is therefore perhaps not quite so polished as their best selling (by early music standards) studio album of Notre Dame material Pérotin, and grandiose pieces like the famed graduals Viderunt Omnes and Sederunt Principes of Pérotin don't come across here quite as imposing and impressive. Only two other pieces from that other recording reappear here, Veni Creator Spiritus and Alleluia Nativitas.

Other pieces chosen here are a number of conductus pieces (some performed in an isosyllabic manner, others as "modal" employing rhythmic modes similar to clausulae in organum pieces such as Viderunt & Sederunt), and avoiding a solely Parisian focus have also included a troped Gloria from England and the sequences Christus Surrexit and Stirps Iesse from Aquitaine. Most of the works are four part, including all the surviving four part conductus pieces, sung by the entire ensemble of countertenor David James, tenors Rogers Covey-Crump and John Potter with baritone Gordon Jones, with a couple of three part, one two part and one solo.

The booklet notes here are far more interesting and useful as those with the studio album, and full sung texts are supplied with translations.
