3.0 out of 5 stars I didn't rent it but... it made me laugh.
"It's is a boy girl thing" isn't the kind of movie I'd normally rent. In fact, I didn't rent it, but when I found it in my house, I gave in to temptation and watched it. I must confess it made me laugh.

This film got panned when it was released, but undeservedly. It has real charm. And the likeable two main actors give convincing performances in their switched personas. The concept of bodyswapping is not new (remember Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan, for example) but this boy-girl bodyswap feels new, and successfully milks the contrast in teenage aspirations, urges, hopes and worries across the sexes; in the process it generates a lot of laughs and, of course, a little pathos. Kevin Zegers does well enough, but Samaire Armstrong has - maybe a surprise to you as well as me - genuine acting ability, and the scene on the veranda with her father towards the end of the film is a study in looks and nuances. I think this film counts amongst of the best of the teen-based genre

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, 23 May 2007
This review is from: It's a Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
This movie doesn't deserve a bad review. Other than the body swapping, this movie is very different from Freaky Friday, and the acting was very good.

Watching this you'll have plenty of laughs, believe me, and of course we all know that the characters will fall in love, but that's what we want and expect from a romantic comedy. You'll want to watch this movie again soon after it finishes. I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Day Trip and the Museum, 12 Jun 2007

This review is from: It's a Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I daresay like most people, I wasn't expecting much from this film. But also, like most people I was very pleasantly surprised. Those who label this film as nothing more than a high-concept rip-off of Freaky Friday are really missing the point.

The body swap genre has been around for years, centuries even, and it is used well here to show each of our protagonists how the other side live, you see, the difference the film focuses on, rather than the gender difference, is the class difference between the two of them. Woody is living for high school, as Nell rightly points out, this is as good as it gets for him. No matter what happens, he won't get a great job, or be able to get a nice house in the city. This doesn't bother him to start with, but as he tastes life on the other side of the fence, the frustrations of the class system in American life start to get to him.

As for Nell, true, she would of probably had a prosperous life, but at the expense of her personality, her mother represents the person she would of become, an uncaring bossy woman who looks down on everyone who isn't as privledged as she. When she sees this, she realises that she doesn't want to be that person.

Yes, they fall in love, but it's nice to see this handled properly, as the couple overcome their differences, they start to see the good points in each other rather than focusing on the negative, and it's quite easy to see why they do fall for each other, plus it's kinda sweet too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take it from a 20 year old male American, 16 Jun 2007
This review is from: It's a Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
This movie rocks! I saw some clips on YouTube and although I'm more into movies like The Matrix and Saw and Spiderman I got curious and went looking for it at Blockbuster. They told me they never heard of it!!! So I went online and found it on Amazon.co.uk and bought it. I am glad I did. The 2 leading actors are incredible!!! There is one scene that blew me away with the acting ability of Samaire Armstrong. Woody in Nell's body is in the showers in the locker room and the facial expressions she made had me rewind the movie and watch again because I thought that Samaire's character was being played by a boy!!!!! That is how good she is!!!! Kevin Zegers isn't bad himself he acts like he has never seen himself before. I don't want to give specifics but you get the picture. This is a hilarious movie and I was surprises at how much stuff you can put in a children's movie. I loved it and yes I am straight. I wish this movie would come to the US because it would be a big hit but I don't think that will happen because of the content. Well say hi to the Queen for me and I hope you will see this wonderful movie. On a side note not many American High School boys are like what Woody and Horse are portrayed in the movie.

"It's is a boy girl thing" isn't the kind of movie I'd normally rent. In fact, I didn't rent it, but when I found it in my house, I gave in to temptation and watched it. I must confess it made me laugh.

This film is very predictable, but quite funny, despite the fact that the humor is rather crude sometimes... The two main characters are Nell (Samaire Armstrong), a bright and somewhat nerdy young woman, and Woody (Kevin Zegers), a football player that has the popularity that Nell lacks, but isn't very accustomed to using his brain. Even though these typical albeit very different teenagers can't stand each other, they will have to reach a compromise, due to an spell that ends up switching their bodies. Confusion ensues, as you can imagine...

All in all, I think that those that are expecting the classic high school comedy will like it, if their expectations are just to have some fun... If that is your case, recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does very little with the gender swap story, 27 April 2011

This review is from: It's a Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I had recently watched a gender body swap film called Switch that I really enjoyed. Another film of its sub-genre niche was very appealing so I decided to give this film another look. It always appeared to be a very weak film so I'd previously avoided it even though the story was of interest. Although the film didn't suddenly look great, the unexpectedly positive reviews on Amazon made me give it a shot.

I can't say I was impressed. There was a feeling of incompleteness about the film, as though the concept hadn't been fully thought out and the potentially unsettling implications understood. To me it feels like an early draft with a lot of work still to be done (it probably went through scores of re-writes over many years for all I know).

A lot of obvious jokes, situations and observations are completely ignored. In the hands of a noted maverick director this might be considered a sign of having bigger, more important conceptual fish to fry. In the hands of a director for hire hack it comes across as poor craftsmanship on everyone's part.

Frankly the obvious gender switch problems and observations are significantly more interesting than the actual plot itself (she needs to pass a meeting with a professor to get into Yale, he needs to win an important game that talent scouts will be watching). I'm not going as far as saying the plot doesn't matter, just that it comes a distant second to the whole gender situation.

As the film mostly ignores these issues we are left with a rather drab, generic movie that doesn't have much of interest happening in it. The main and supporting characters aren't funny in and of themselves and the humour is mostly restrained with almost no toilet humour, which is odd for a film set in a high school. As a teen comedy it's a long way from American Pie.

It's not a bad film, just a disappointing, mediocre one. I very strongly recommend Switch over this.

5.0 out of 5 stars could watch it over and over again, 20 Jun 2008
This review is from: It's a Boy Girl Thing [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
this film is so easy and enjoyable to watch! apart from the unrealistic concept for the film it was brilliant! the idea is unrealistic however it makes a great movie and is aas believeable as it could be. i found the acting brilliant and there are many hilarious lines, actions and manorisms made by the two leads which make it very enjoyable to watch. the actors fit prefectly into the rolse as if they really have body-swapped!
