5.0 out of 5 stars Denon AH-D5000 Headphones, 28 July 2010
This review is from: Denon AH-D5000 Closed Type Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
Choosing HIFI components from reviews is very difficult; it is such a subjective matter.

No headphones are going to sound as well as good quality speakers even if you pay twice or three times the price of these hardly inexpensive 'phones.

I consider the Denon 5000 to be excellent headphones. They look heavy but sit lightly and comfortably on the head for considerable periods. The mahogany shells are quite attractive.

The sound is what is often described as open and having listened to these 'phones I now understand what it means; one quickly forgets that the sound is coming from small boxes sitting directly on the ears for it fills a space much bigger. The whole range is clear and resonant tending towards warm. I would prefer a slightly more crystalline high end, the mid range is very good and the bass outstanding without being too dominant.

The headphones are obviously intended for home use being provided with 3 metres of heavy, cloth covered flex making it awkward for carrying around with an ipod. Indeed unless you are going to listen to 320Kbps MP3 tracks these quality headphones are wasted for they will show all the defects of low bit rate recordings. To get the best from these headphones you need a good quality amplifier, the 25 ohm resistance demands quite a lot of volume. I have listened to Bach Cantatas, organ, orchestral, modern jazz and popular vocals and enjoyed all genre. I believe they will delight and give years of happy listening.

The price is good and advancedmp3players' service is excellent - I had the 'phones on my head within 24 hours of placing the order.

5.0 out of 5 stars A serious investment...but worth it., 23 Jan 2012

First of all I agree with the other reviews here the sound quality of these headphones is astounding, but to get the most of them you need to feed them a high quality signal. These headphones are very detailed and will reveal the slightest faults in recordings and mastering. The old adage rubbish in rubbish out is very true with these phones.

I would assume anyone who is going to invest this kind of money is going to have a reasonable hi-fi set up, but if you don't be warned, these headphones take some driving and volume levels with portable equipment and pc sound cards may not be adequate.

I did a lot of research before buying and there are many reviews online which say the bass is a bit overdone, personally I have not found this to be the case and find the bass to be tight, tuneful and acurate.

I also have a pair of bose QC3's for outdoor and travelling purposes, (the Denons are definately for indoor use only)
the denons blow these out of the water for both sound quality and comfort.

The build quality is excellent, I find them extemely comfortable over long periods of time.

I believe that Denon are discontinuing these phones so if your in the market for a superb pair of headphones, buy now or you may miss your chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important update: AHD5000, 24 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Denon AH-D5000 Closed Type Stereo Headphones (Electronics)
I cannot emphasize enough just how important it is to let these 5000 unit headphones "burn-in," as the pro's say. A lot of rubbish and nonsense is spoken by techno-geeks but it really is true. They change alot after a few hundred hours of listening, and much to the better. But these. They are great but use you intelligence guys, they're not gonna be much better from an ipod on 128 KPS are they? Give them what they deserve and put some signal through them and you will know that it is money well-spent.
