5.0 out of 5 stars Samson and Delilah in a superb restoration
This DVD is fantastic in the glorious restoration that presents all the majesty and sumptuous costumes in vivid detail .

2.0 out of 5 stars Samson & delilah DVD
The Chinese subtitles on the outer main sleeve of this DVD release immediately make you realise that this DVD isn't going to be of the best quality, and you'll be right! Looks as if this could be an NTSC 'off-air' recording which has been badly transferred to DVD. AND the Paramount Pictures logo at the front of the movie is missing, so there might be copyright infringment...

This DVD is fantastic in the glorious restoration that presents all the majesty and sumptuous costumes in vivid detail .
Despite all the criticism levelled at this film as pure cheese camp and hokum I still have great fondness for this Cecil.B.DeMille masterpiece .
Victor Mature fills the screen as the archetypal Samson with braggadocio ,humour and despair but the beautiful Hedy Lamarr is the true star in the film with flashing blue green eyes that twinkle with vixenish mischief or broken hearted in tears at the self torturing guilt of her part in her beloved Samson's downfall
George Sanders is imperious and awe inspiring as the Saran of Gaza using his rich incisive voice beautifully and with menace also splendid is DeMille stalwart Henry Wilcoxon as the evil and jealous warrior Prince Ahtur .
The film is great as a study of a brilliant directors dedication in the twilight of a glorious career still pains taking and skilled at composition editing and astounding cinematic craftsmanship .
Would so have loved a commentary and a few other extra bonuses but maybe the cost of the restoration negated this option ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Samson And Delilah, 18 July 2007
Brillant, Fantastic Great film to watch from the biblical era, when will someone release this classic on DVD it is nearly 60 Years Old and I am sure this will sell by the cart load. Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr are on top form they give a real sense of meaning how acting should operate.

Somebody should pull their finger out Now and get this DVD release?

This is worth more than 5 Stars and is up there with Ben Hur.

But as this movie has never had a DVD release in the UK then beggars cannot be chosers. At least it was cheap and it arrived on time !!

You get what you pay for !

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Delilah, 30 Jun. 2013

DVDs of this Cecil B. DeMille Biblical epic have been around in various forms over the years. Mostly, they have been been of, at best, average quality. Now at last this version has come along and the film has been restored to its full glory. The colours are rich and sumptuous and the print seems to have been well cleaned up. I welcome this into my collection.

Of the film itself, there is not much to say. It is typical DeMille hokum designed to please a wide audience with spectacle. In this there is no disappointment but do not expect any great acting. Victor Mature is the hulk who does what he has to do. John Gielgud or Larry Olivier he isn't but he wasn't expected to be. George Sanders is suitably superior and debonair even in fancy dress. Angela Lansbury is attractive and reminds us that she had a life before Jessica Fletcher. It's worth keeping your eyes open for a few names in the supporting cast but it is Delilah who really steals the show.

Hedy Lamarr was, in my opinion, a reasonable actress but it was her beauty that surpassed all. Here it is seen in glorious colour. Now, if my barber looked like Hedy...

Whilst you can't ignore the Bible original, just forget it for a couple of hours and enjoy this well restored piece of Hollywood in its heyday when films were there to entertain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Samson snd Delilah, 7 Aug. 2011
This review is from: Samson & Delilah [DVD] [US Import] (DVD)
This video is by far the worst copy i have ever seen, the sound is so bad that even with full volume you still cant hear it. And the picture is bad as well, I was looking forward to getting this DVD as it is one of my favorite films not to mention the fact that my late father was an exact double of Victor Mature. I cant understand why all the other reviews did not mention the bad sound and picture. What ever you do, do not waste £10 plus postage and packing on this video

Made when they used to know how to make a good movie.

HD 4:3 picture and mono sound are very good and minimal if no grain.

Plays okay on a UK Region BD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars not the greatest acting in the world but some very memorable scenes, 31 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very entertaining movie. not the greatest acting in the world but some very memorable scenes, Such as when Hedy stands in front of Vic, not knowing he is blind and as he approaches her she sees he is blind and the horror of it shows on her face, Of course when Vic(Samson) pulls the temple down, great effects, no false cga in those days. A good value dvd
