I have long shunned the cornier types of bands, the Lombardos, Kayes, Morgans and, from England, the Winnicks, mainly because of their silly little tricks, the excessive vibrato, the clipped brass phrasings and their utter unswingingness. For two bands I'll gladly make an exception: Kay Kyser's 1940s band and, only a recent discovery, Horace Heidt. I first came across Heidt on a Jasmine Bobby Hackett CD: At the Jazz Band Ball 1938-1940. Hackett, after having led an eminently unsuccessful big band of his own, was financially bailed out by Heidt and became a member of his band for the better part of a year. (Afterwards Hackett joined Glenn Miller; his solo on "String of Pearls" has become immortal.) The Heidt band displayed a number of corny effects, such as the swooping Hawaiian guitar, the high register trombone and the triple-tonguing trumpets, but its legitimate phrasing, fullness of tone and, yes, its swing, were quite astounding. So I took the plunge and ordered thus twofer and I was gladly surprised; among the few cornier traits, there is a lot of good music to be found; after 1941 the band goes all legitimate (featuring among other things, Bill Finegan arrangements) and, surprisingly, loses a lot of its former charm.
The two CDs give a good cross of Heidt's band at the pinnacle of its success; a pity that Jasmine chose to dedicate the better part of disc two to the more legitimate later big band, but there you are. For those few who are still into the older kinds of dance music, this might be quite a welcome addition to their discographies.

Couldn't get much better than this. Beautifully restored sound, superb showmanship, unique style by one of the best remembered bandleaders.
